My friends gave me a $300 USD ukelele for Christmas, and up until now I have never gotten down to learn and play it. I was just browsing around for ukelele apps and found this. I was kind of glad that I found this app, because my ukelele is the same brand, Kala. I opened it and found many songs to play along to, although some were part of the “full access“ package. Since I didnt know ANY chords or notes, I watched the videos teaching the fingering on different chords, and once I knew enough, I played all these different songs, and already on the first day I could play the song Lavenders Blue. I found myself playing on Kala for three straight hours. Yes, I am not exaggerating!!! THREE HOURS STRAIGHT!! I already knew I had to buy the full access, and I am still so happy I found it. I have improved soo much using this app, so thank you to whoever started this app! There are many other reveiews for this app, and most say its bad and give it 1 star. I strongly disagree because it gave me a head start on ukelele and aftr 3 weeks Im still using it, and I am not planning on quitting. There are no problems for this app, nothing to improve! Its amazing.

So I’ve had a chance to play around with the app a little bit and unfortunately it doesn’t let you start at your level. It makes you start at the very beginning and you have to watch a bunch of videos and play through a bunch of songs that are so rudimentary…it’s a waste of my time. Then when you’re playing the songs it forces you to plug in headphones in order to have the app sense when you’re playing the right chords. Well my headphones are the Apple headphones with these built-in microphone unfortunately, it doesn’t pick up the ukulele because It’s not in front of the ukulele. It’s on my body. so no matter what I do, it says that I’m not playing the chords, which I clearly am. I mean it’s happy birthday for Pete’s sake. I’ve played the guitar for Like 20 years now. I’ve had an injury which has prevented me from playing it so that’s why I’m playing the ukulele now…to rehabilitate my hands, but I was looking for just a way to pick up some new tricks, And it’s not going to be via this app clearly.

This is a very useful app for a beginner, even the free content. They have a selection of videos teaching a handful of basic chords and strumming patterns which are very efficiently and clearly produced. The free songs (as well as paid) include chord guides and strumming patterns for each chord used in the song with links back to the chord instruction videos for clarity.This is more than sufficient as a starting resource for a beginner who is a motivated self-learner. I have tried learning mandolin and guitar in the past but struggled because I have very weak hands, but with this app I have already played a song on the ukulele and greatly enjoyed the learning process. It felt more like a game than a learning drill. I’ll work through more of the free songs and chords but I’m already considering paying for full content.
