FAQs:

What are Leagues?

Leagues allows you to compete with other Brilliant users on a weekly leaderboard. You earn XP by learning on Brilliant and face off against others to try to take the top spot on your leaderboard. You can participate in a fun, friendly competition with other learners and reach your learning goals at the same time!

How does it work?

Each week you earn points for correctly answering problems. After completing your first lesson for the week with point earnings, you are entered into a league to compete against 30 other learners to see who can earn the most experience points (XP).You are ranked against other learners in a Leaderboard accessible from the Brilliant homepage or the Leagues tab of your mobile app. At the end of the week, the top performers move up to the next league, while those with the lowest scores either remain in the same league or fall back to the previous one.

When does the League week start and end?

The league week starts on Sunday at 8pm PST/2am UTC.

You can join a league up until 12 hours before the league week ends, so earn your first XP before Sunday at 8am PT and you will be part of a leaderboard.

How do I move between league levels?

You move between league levels depending on your ranking and which level you’re currently in.

For the first 5 levels (Hydrogen, Lithium, Carbon, Neon, Titanium)

Top 15 users are promoted

Middle 10 users stay in their level

Bottom 5 users return to previous level

For the 6th and 7th levels (Xenon, Barium)

Top 10 users are promoted

Middle 15 users stay in their level

Bottom 5 users return to previous level

For the 8th-10th levels (Neodymium, Tungsten, Einsteinium)

Top 5 users are promoted

Middle 20 users stay in their level

Bottom 5 users return to previous level

If you do not participate in a given league week due to inactivity, you will not get promoted or demoted. You will remain in the same level until you participate again. Right now, Einsteinium is the highest level you can be in. Keep up the good work to remain in that level once you’ve reached it.

Comments:

I decided to conquer my fears of inadequacy and stay open to this app, and even in one week I can see how it’s paying off. About six months ago, I tried it but was quickly intimidated and even uninstalled the app. This time, however, I’m staying open and not judging myself when I get incorrect answers. (Although once I did judged the app developers for an “incorrect” answer of mine, but while writing a feedback to them for why their answer and explanation to their answer were incorrect, I realized why their answer was right and what I had missed in my own deductive training to have tracked the incorrect conclusion. LOL.) I do get a nice little dopamine hit though when I see that “Correct!” after hitting “submit.”The program presents in a way that is really encouraging to just get in there and work my mind in new ways. I noticed I feel better and more organized in my thinking when I start my day with about 20+ minutes of these kinds of brain exercises in the morning. So I have my coffee and breakfast while working through some problems in a relaxed way.I’m looking forward to trying other courses/programs after I finish the Logic one.

I have a lifelong learning disability with math, but I've always wanted to understand it. I'm a visual learner, and I can't stand the pretentious lingo taught in school. Overall, Brilliant is perfect for my learning style. It does a great job helping me visualize mathematical concepts and make them more relatable in daily life. That said, the logic course needs work. It presupposes that you already have an intuitive understanding, which I don't, due to my learning disability. I think in pictures, not logically, and some of the answers to the questions are downright baffling. In some questions, they say they have provided all the information needed to make a logical conclusion, when in fact we have no proof whatsoever and can only speculate. They expect a correct answer to an impossible question. I can't recommend this course to anyone unfamiliar with logical reasoning, because you're on your own with no help, unlike the math courses. The math courses are much better overall. Unlike Khan Academy, they don't simply tell you you're wrong with no explanation. They point out exactly where you erred, or what you should notice, so you truly understand what you're learning. That doesn't make it easy, but it's very much worthwhile. I hope the developers will take this approach with the logic courses in the future.

Definitely different & far more educational then any of “Exercise your brain” apps! I know the running joke is “I’m so glad I learned the quadratic formula in high school instead of how to do my taxes,” but a lot of people disregard the fact that practicing math is essential in developing your mind & maintaining plasticity. You may not apply algebraic formulas to your every day life, but the use of logic that is required to solve complex math problems is not something we practice as humans in our day to day. I promise that practicing algebra, calculus, geometry, etc. has much more benefit to your mind than simply gaining the ability to find the area of a circle. There’s even studies that show regular studying of of mathematics can lesser instances & severity of Dementia & Alzheimer's, even when highly inheritable. Again, I’m only 4 days in, but I’d currently be happy to pay the price for the subscription.Removed a star because this app is clearly still in development, and there’s a lot of confusing questions. I took math all the way up to AP Calculus BC in high school, which I’m only 7 years removed from, and I still have to sit and read some of the questions out loud, and several times over, to understand what’s being asked of me.

Final Thoughts:

Brilliant is an educational app to test your knowledge of different subjects, mainly math and physics. To do so, instead of beating you senseless with hundreds of pages of theory, it gives you tons of interactive exercises. The app includes thousands of problems ranging from basic math to computational science, including algebra and probability. In each subject, you can find hundreds of problems that both test your knowledge and give you instant feedback. One of the great things about Brilliant is how it keeps a complete list of your activity. That way, you can see on your profile how you've progressed, how many subjects you've got a handle on, how many problems you've solved, how many days in a row you've studied, and much more.Brilliant is an excellent educational app that lets you practice many different subjects. Best of all, you can practice them in a fun way, with intuitive and well-formulated questions.
