The Spoils Of War

The plot begins with you returning from war and seeing as you were a slave trader before your departure, you lay claim to what you left behind. You have the choice of a male or female slave which is a nice touch and very accommodating of all sexual orientations. From there is a task of training your slave to be the best they can be and when you feel you have done all you can do, you can trade your slave and usually turn a pretty large profit for your efforts.

You control your slave’s behaviour through a mix of sex and punishment, the Roman version of the carrot and the stick I suppose. You can also build endurance through whipping, keep your slave fed and watered. It’s a rather complex set of mechanics that you might not expect from a game of this nature.

All Roads Lead To Rome

The game also has an absolutely outstanding set of visuals which only adds to the overall immersion that you feel throughout. The slaves are well designed, well-rendered and you can adjust their appearance depending on what your sexual preferences are. Then in terms of the environment, you have a series of areas that are quintessentially Roman with architecture and NPC models that you would imagine being present in that era.

The sound quality doesn’t quite match the level of the art style and visuals. The voices used for the characters are limited at best and the musical score is nothing to write home about. As a whole though, it’s handled well enough as to not be a negative asset for this game, just not to the same standard as the visuals.

UI makes up for this with a simple and easy to follow layout that makes all the tasks you’ll have to complete pretty intuitively. The controls also play into this design and you’ll find navigating the Roman Streets and getting down and dirty with your slaves an absolute breeze.

It’s hard to get excited about games like this because they often let you down, promising the world and then only delivering a narrative-driven text adventure. Slaves Of Rome not only bucks this trend but delivers a series of interwoven mechanics and content to get stuck into.
