I had a wonderful time with Hyper Light Drifter and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I was drawn in. I initially bought this game knowing nothing about it, other than that it had a cool art style. I was in for a surprise for sure.The mechanics are simple and you have all of the tools that you need. I found that I kept trying difficult sections over and over with the same enthusiasm every time. This game respects the player and does not hold your hand, but it is not unfair. It gives you a mostly open world to explore and double back upon. If I let my guard down when re-exploring sections, I would die just as easily as I did the first time I explored that section. This is not a complaint, but a compliment, as the game was technically the same "difficulty" the entire way through. My approach to problems changed to fit the situation.
Incredible game, but its a crying shame there's no cloud saves, because I've lost my save twice now and don't feel like starting again.. The last time I played it I was close enough to beating the game, and had spent a lot of time hunting for secrets & doing the optional challenges. Just booted it up again after a year or two and all that progress was gone.. So beware! It's a 10/10 for me, aesthetically, musically, gameplay, everything is perfect; except for the fact that because I'm forgetful and a little too ADHD to focus on one game at a time, no cloud saves means I'm bound to lose my progress eventually :c.a me-problem for sure, so i'm definitely recommending this gem
Gameplay wise, early game feels very annoying because of the way dash ability works. In the game you dash towards the mouse cursor which is weird because your sword and gun attacks also go towards the cursor. It would have been nicer if devs added a setting that lets you dash towards your wasd direction instead of curser. Besides those, game doesnt do a very good job at explaining character upgrade and stuff which it requires you to watch a beginner guide video. But after getting use to mechanics and unlocking some abilities rest of the game becomes way more fun and satisfying to explore. For the bosses, there is a checkpoint after entering the boss room so dying isnt that annoying. Their attacks patterns are easy to learn but for some bosses its still hard to dodge. I wish their rewards were a little bit more satisfying. Also it would have been better to add an achivements for every boss instead of a "beat all bosses" achivement.
