Rance 01 -Quest for Hikari is an adult game based on the Rance series. Players control a selfish and lecherous MC who embarks on a quest for women. Characters:

Rance: The protagonist.A skilled warrior and pretty competent adventurer whose head is constantly filled with adult thoughts, which makes him act solely on desire and instinct.

Sill Plain: Rance’s XXXXX.She’s a powerful mage, but in the four months Rance has owned her, he’s used her for endless housework, random tasks, and other things…Her role during this job is to act as Rance’s assistant.

Kentou Kanami: One of Lia’s personal ninjas, she does all the dirty or secret jobs that Lia orders her to do. While seemingly apathetic from the outside, Kanami is very concerned with her ability as a ninja. It’s implied that she is always training by herself to hone her skills. She longs to be a normal girl, but that’s an impossible dream. Lia orders her to keep tabs on Rance, a job she hates since she also hates him.

Lia Parapara Leazas: Leazas has prospered under her rule, even though she was only recently coronated. However, many nobles hate her and her ways and have tried to take her down in the past or even go as far as assisting enemy countries.

Gameplay:

The original Rance 1 was an adventure game with RPG combat thrown in. You would go into the field, hit attack until things died, go buy the best weapon and repeat until you could kill the strongest thing out there and had the best weapons bought. That takes about 10 minutes and then you are ready to just rub Rance’s face into everything to find stuff.

01 keeps the adventure game face rubbing. Interrogating and investigating are still a major part of the game’s advancement and a lot of good stuff is hidden behind looking around a lot. The combat on the other hand is completely different.

So this is technically a card game, though it calls them chips. You have a small amount of chips on you that represent your inventory. Weapons, armor, items, and key items all are chips. Some have passive abilities like stopping status effects, but most are either quest items or battle only stuff.

Combat is turn based. You throw up as many chips as you can/want each turn to deal damage and defend yourself. Each chip has an attack value, defense value, and a cooldown that represents how often you can use it in combat. Cooldowns only reset when you leave exploring and go back to turn, which you can do any time.

As for dungeoning, its cards. There’s 5 rows, and you can move straight, left, or right. Your goal is usually the blue cards where events occur, though there’s also traps, treasures, and monsters to deal with. Compared to Rance 1 this is a lot more engaging, though just about any kind of system would have been. It has charm though, and for the most part exploring was quick and enjoyable enough.

Features:

No redundant walking around, the game get straight to you through a visual novel/combat hybrid gameplay.

Smooth transition going from the main menu to any stage you unlocked. Repeat previous stage to gain more experience or clear achievements.

Unique battle system which makes all characters use the same Action Points to do their skills.

During the battle you are able to see what skills the enemies will do next before they do it.

Threat system that makes the enemy target the character with the most Threat Points(TP).

Achievement system that allow you to unlock more equipment when done.

Equipment giving you a specific skill with multiple uses for each fight. The equipment you receive at the beginning and when unlocking is randomly generated.

Skill learning system which boosts each of the characters 2 main skills using experience from defeating enemies.

Player Comments:

Playing the modern installations spoil me a lot on this series, I tried playing 1 and 2 and damn these games really are OLD, even with the remakes. Outdated gameplay, the scenes ain't that intersting, repetitive and lacking any quality of life whatsoever. But as a whole the story, the world and the characters totally made up for it.When it comes to the H part its a real hit or miss though - you have to move through about 75% boring, yawn worthy scenes to get to the few good ones.As a whole this series is 10 out of 10, but biggest minus point is most of the games have some form of story connection, character re-appears and continuity from previous games you will have to slog through some parts you don't like to get the whole story.

I can think of very few fantasy series with a more fleshed out world both in terms of width and in depth, with this many memorable, lovable characters (many of which return at times when it makes sense), set to a series of escalating narratives, with plot-twists hitting you in the teeth out of nowhere (but in a good way) set to a soundtrack that has absolutely no business being this good, than Alicesoft's flagship series Rance, period, never mind just within the Japanese market, let alone within its adult segment.Did I mention character-growth yet?This series is perfect.Anyone who disagrees with me on that can go take a flying fuck at a rolling donut.

If you're reading this, sleeping on this series is actively doing yourself a disservice. And that's from someone who has only played a couple games in this series.Sengoku Rance is not just one of my favourite hentai-games, it's one of my favourite strategy-games in general in some aspects, especially when it comes to characters. It's an excellent example of a waifu-collecting game done right, with far more content and craft that you can expect from 90% of indie-titles in general. This series is one that has truly started putting gameplay, story and hentai on equal ground long ago, and is one of the best examples of how to do it right, despite whatever problems the games may have individually.

Summary:

Rance 01 -Quest for Hikari is a remake of the original Rance title which came out 24 years ago. The womanizing warrior Rance is accompanied by his magician slave Sill as they search for the kidnapped noble daughter Hikari. It uses an old-style chip-based battle system, but the layout is pretty polished. It comes with some spiffy BGMs as well.
