Player Comments of Love of Magic:

So it took me a while to figure out what I liked about this game. This is because it has a lot of different elements, it is one part King Arthur, one part poker playing (there is handy little auto function if you can't figure out the poker part, but another way of looking at it is hey you can learn how to do poker which is kinda what I did) with magic and power fantasy, and a veritable kitten kaboodle of Celtic and Norse mythology, along with a world where the modern day mixes with magic as well. You will start off as relatively normal (your not normal normal but you find that out first sequence anyway) male main character and then grow in power until you have enough power to save the world. But its more of a earned character progression as you lose things to get there, and though you do get to save it over the course of three games, its not without loss particularly a certain character who I rather liked more than the main character's scripted interest (who I got rather bored of after a bit, but some people like that sort so no judgement here). There is also huge amount of lore from other books, both fantasy and science fiction mixed in as well, mainly from you reading them, but also in conversation. It was a pleasant surprise to find it as a old nerd myself to see it, why it even had Foundation as a book from Isaac Asimov. Oh it's a sex game, though myself at least have a habit of not paying attention to that as much as I rather like the story more. But not to risque, if that is what you would be frightened of. Found myself rather glancing over it then moving on the story instead. There are deadlines, you can lose out on certain story events if you don't do them at the right times, and checks on your stats. Stats that are important are intelligence, charisma, and strength; intelligence basically lets you learn better, charisma helps in checks and your companions regenerate their skills, strength is more of a hit point and how you attack better. They are balanced pretty well. I actually came to the game from Morningstar which is another game by the author, this game is rather bigger than that one, it's three installments, with the prologue the game that is first one, the meat of the game (the second one), and the third one (which felt more like the epilogue). Paid for it proper and all, and yes it is worth playing, though it will be a bit long, been obsessively playing it for it a bit figuring out the nuances. It has new game + option which means that after you have played through all three games, you get a third game save, which allows you to play the game over with different gems and slightly different variances in story. Anyway play the game, might not be your cup of tea, but I liked it.

First play through was 24 hours. At first i was on the fence about a poker minigame, and unsure about he art style. What i found was an incredibly written and rich story. The Art grew on me, and the minigame wasn't as bad as i thought. I only got 22 of the achievements, so i'm not sure if i'll play it again, or wait till i'm done book 3 then start at book 1 again for the plus mode. I don't play with sound, so i can't say anything about sound or sound effects. I can say that 3/4 of the way through book one this old man was in tears, lol. Highly recommend the game. If you are looking for lewd scenes every 3 mins, move on. This is not the game for you.

Developer Notes of Love of Magic:

I often get asked about localization for Love of Magic, but I've always said no; partially because I considered it a lot of work (it was), and because there's just a ton of text. Across the three books around 650k words, or similar to Lord of the Rings. Evidently I have been busy. Several different translation teams have tried over the years,  but always run out of steam before getting much more than ~1/4 of the way.

At the same time I *get* that there are people who struggle with the language; my English isn't the easiest, and it can be hard to read for ESLs.

So. Enter LLMs. They've actually gotten pretty good, as long as they don't get sanctimonious on you and translate "Cum on her face" to "As a large language model I'm afraid I can't help you process this."  Previously machine translation tended to break in non-obvious ways (the classic reference is translating the statement "The Spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" from English to Russian and back, which led to it saying "The Vodka's great, but the steak is terrible".)

How well did it do? I... don't know. I don't speak Chinese, or Russian, or Turkish. Hopefully people will let me know if it's terrible. I have uploaded the raw .txt files to my Discord so people can edit it directly.

Apart from that there's a number of new and updated content. NGP is now complete, with big new quest-lines in Book 2, a satisfying and long overdue meeting in Elsewhere in book 3, and a true ending. And more sex, of course, because sex always sells. Assuming they let us market it.

Speaking of which, I don't know if anyone will SEE this devlog, since all adult games have gotten delisted from the itch.io store. If you're reading this, do let me know in the comments, or drop by on Discordand say hi!

Walkthrough of Love of Magic:

Gaining access to the Paths

Prerequisites: day 3

After the inauguration, visit Katie at the gym who will tell you more about gems. Afterwards, go to your room in The Crowley to unlock the "Organize Gems" screen.

Next speak to Chloe about buying or trading gems, which unlocks the portal in the Basement. During this conversation you can even wheedle a free gem out of her (requires Charisma 6). Go to the basement to take a look at the portal.

Following your first Evoker lecture on day 5, visit the University in the morning(day 6 at the earliest) where you run into Dylan and discuss traveling the Paths. This sets a chain of events into motion ending with you, Katie and Dylan making your first trip into Elsewhere.

After this the ability to visit Elsewhere in the morning unlocks permanently on day 13.

Katie's Strip MMA

Prerequisites: day 3

Katie originally floats the idea of a strip MMA battle at the matriculation ceremony. You can challenge her by going to the gym in the morning or the evening. In order to defeat her you will require 10+ in Strength, Intelligence and Charisma.

The fight takes place over 3 rounds, and you will be offered 3 approaches, each with their own skillcheck. To emerge victorious choose each of the approaches once. After you defeat her, she'll offer to continue the fight on the ground, accepting will lead to a scene, refusing ends the event.

If you lose the fight, head back to Chloe at the Crowley, and purchase a bottle of whisky for Katie to get a rematch; there's a CHR check that allows you to get a staff discount.

Katie's Perfect Gem

Prerequisites: day 20

After the Library opens up on University (day 12, at the Evoker lecture), you'll find the Quartermaster there. He's able to sell you gems, but if you say that you need a special Fire Gem for a special girl, he'll offer to sell you a True Flawless Fire gem after day 20. You can't use it yourself, but you can give it to Katie at the Gym in the evening (even if she is not visible) to unlock an ability as well as a scene. The gem will cost you 500 pounds, though. (The option is visible after you ask him "Can you get me some fire gems?")

Olivia's CM Lesson

Prerequisites: day 14, purchased at least 1 gem from the Quartermaster

When speaking to the Quartermaster, he'll inform you there's a private library with a cute assistant upstairs where you can study in quiet. The assistant (Olivia) has got a couple of discussions about magic, and how she's being stopped from finding the truth. The final conversation is about her discovery of a book on Ceremonial Magic.

Next morning when you go to the University, Katie will find you and mention that she helped someone get into the Ceremonial Magic chamber.

Conclusion:

Embark on a magical journey in our immersive new app, where you are admitted into the prestigious Master of Arts in Applied Thaumaturgy program at Edinburgh University. Rub elbows with powerful demi-Gods and fascinating characters, all while navigating the mysterious Paths of Elsewhere. With stunning visuals and captivating storytelling, you'll uncover hidden secrets, engage in thrilling romances, and unlock your true destiny.
