Use short presses instead of long presses. This avoids distractions when accelerating.
Pick up hats if you see them, as you might get pricked by spikes.
Don't jump towards enemies from below. You should jump from the highest point possible to gain more acceleration and avoid being hit by spikes. If there's no higher position or other way, jump on the same plank a few times before jumping towards enemies.
