This role-playing game features a variety of mechanics. Players primarily gain experience by killing skeletons, and each level up allows you to choose 2 out of 4 random upgrades. Some of these upgrades are special abilities (up to 4), with powerful effects, such as turning all gold into swords or gaining a completely new chessboard (teleportation); these abilities have a cooldown of X turns after use. Occupying shield tiles while at full armor increases the armor experience bar, allowing you to choose one of four equipment upgrade options. Equipment can also be upgraded when the gold "experience" bar is full.
In addition, your class, race, and skills from your randomly selected skill pool will provide corresponding bonuses/debuffs. Classes are unlocked by defeating skeleton bosses, each with their own special abilities and necessary tactics. Sometimes they only drop gold, sometimes they drop new class items, and sometimes they drop class upgrade items. The higher your class rank, the more customization you can offer. For example, you can class-change a priest to an orc for racial bonuses (and more).
