Grand Theft Auto IV is a beloved open-world action-adventure game. Players control three protagonists as they begin their new lives in Liberty City. The secrets of the three protagonists intertwine, drawing them into various crises and conspiracies, witnessing darkness, moral decay, and betrayal. Players can freely drive various types of vehicles through the streets, enjoying the scenery or engaging in thrilling police chases. The game especially features a director mode, allowing players to freely set various parameters such as unlimited lives and whether to be wanted, providing an extremely free experience.
Grand Theft Auto IV is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective. Players complete missions—linear scenarios with set objectives—to progress through the story. It is possible to have several active missions running at one time, as some require players to wait for further instructions or events. Outside of missions, players can freely roam the game's open world and complete optional side missions. Composed of the fictional city of Liberty City, the world is larger in area than most earlier Grand Theft Auto series entries. At the beginning of the game, players can only explore a limited area—Bohan, Broker, and Dukes—with all other islands unlocking as the story progresses.
Players use melee attacks, firearms and explosives to fight enemies, and may run, jump, swim or use vehicles to navigate the game's world. There is a first-person perspective option when using vehicles. In combat, auto-aim and a cover system can be used as assistance against enemies. Should players take damage, their health meter can regenerate by consuming food or drinks, using medical kits, or calling for paramedics. If players commit crimes, law enforcement may respond as indicated by a "wanted" meter in the head-up display (HUD). On the meter, a count of stars indicates the current wanted level. Gaining more stars will cause law enforcement to incapacitate players more aggressively and extends the wanted vicinity area, and is capped at six stars. The player can evade police by travelling outside the wanted vicinity area, after this the wanted meter enters a cool-down mode, law enforcement hunt for the player, and eventually recedes when they are hidden from the officers' line of sight.
The game's cover system allows players to move between obstacles, to fire blindly, aim freely, and target a specific enemy. Individual body parts can also be targeted. Melee attacks include additional moves, such as dodging, blocking, disarming an opponent and counter-attacking. Body armour can be used to absorb gunshots and explosive damage, but is used up in the process. When health is entirely depleted, gameplay stops, and players respawn at the nearest hospital.
The single-player mode lets players control an Eastern European war veteran, Niko Bellic. During the story, Niko meets and befriends various new characters. While free roaming the game world, players may engage in context-specific activities such as bowling or darts, either alone or with friends. Other available activities include a vigilante mini-game, and in-game television programming. Hanging out, answering calls, or completing missions of friends will increase that friend's respect. If their respect is high enough, the player can unlock favours; for example, Niko's cousin Roman owns a taxi service, and can send one of his cabs to take Niko to any destination without a fee. Cabs are always available during gameplay for quick travel to a destination. Throughout the course of the game, players are also faced with morality choices, which alter the storyline appropriately depending on the player's choice. Niko has a cell phone for contacting friends and hanging out with them through activities. The cell phone is also used to access the game's online multiplayer mode, and to enter cheat codes. To access the in-game Internet, which allows Niko to send and receive emails and set up prospective dates with potential girlfriends, Niko can use Internet cafés located around the city. The game also features a subway system, allowing players to quickly traverse through the game's world.

A Captivating Narrative Comes to Mobile: GTA 4 adapts the thrilling open-world adventures of Niko Bellic onto Android devices, delivering intense action and detailed storytelling on-the-go. Players step into the shoes of Niko, an Eastern European veteran who travels to Liberty City seeking a fresh start but quickly discovers escaping the past isn't easy. The storyline unravels with rich dialogues and compelling characters, creating a deeply immersive experience.
Expansive Open-World Gameplay: In true Grand Theft Auto fashion, the gameplay offers full freedom to explore Liberty City's sprawling streets, alleys, and hidden corners either on foot or behind the wheel of various authentic-feeling vehicles. Players can engage with missions structured around a core narrative or explore side activities and challenges spread throughout the game world, giving plenty of opportunities to enjoy the environment beyond integral story quests.
Responsive Controls and Solid Gameplay Mechanics: The game's touch controls efficiently adapt the console controls for mobile users. Movement, driving mechanics, and combat actions integrate successfully onto smaller screens, making it accessible even to players unfamiliar with the original console versions. Combat scenarios are well-paced and coordinated, with targeting and shooting mechanics smoothly translating the action-packed feel of GTA 4 to mobile platforms.
Multiplayer Adds to Replay Value: Beyond the single-player campaign, GTA 4 also supports an online multiplayer mode, letting up to 32 players partake in cooperative gameplay or competitive showdowns. With multiple game modes available, the robust multiplayer environment provides significant replay value, allowing users continuous engagement with new challenges and team-based missions.

Steal Cars Wisely: Stealing cars is a fundamental aspect of the game (you know, hence the name of the game). However, there are smart and not-so-smart ways to boost cars, and it's important that you keep the proper methods in your head as you play. Generally, you'll want to, at all costs, avoid cops. That means that if a cop is in your vicinity, you'll want to wait for the cop to leave before stealing a car. Stealing cars around a cop will automatically draw attention to yourself. Also, preference should be given to stealing parked, abandoned cars as opposed to manned cars. This avoids the chance that you commit any more crimes as you steal the car, which will generally not be desirable. Breaking a window and hotwiring a car is easier than stealing a manned car and killing the driver in the process, after all.
Be Healthy: Niko won't heal himself, so if you take damage during a mission, that damage will stay with you indefinitely until you do something about. The easiest way to cure what ails Niko is to feed him something. Find a hotdog vendor on the streets, or head to a fast food joint or a restaurant. At these places, you can find various foods that will heal Niko. By following a regimen of eating regularly, you'll allow Niko to stay at his healthiest for the duration of the game.
Use Armor: Armor allows you to effectively double the amount of damage you can take from firearms. And since damage in the game will be mostly dealt with firearms, it's incredibly important that you wear armor when it becomes available to you. You can buy it for a pretty penny at some shady establishments throughout Liberty City, but you're better off finding it at random locations in the city and revisiting those locales as you need to re-up on spent armor.
Stay Strapped: Staying equipped with weapons at all times will increase your likelihood of survival tenfold. It's important to try to have a variety of weapons at your disposal, too, so you can approach situations from various angles. For instance, having a baseball bat, pistol, uzi and shotgun will allow you to kill enemies in all sorts of useful ways, from the monotony of a melee attack to the pleasure of a multiple-kill shotgun blast. Remember that if you're arrested, you'll lose your weapons, but they're easy enough to replace. You can use earned cash to buy them, or better yet, collect weapons from downed enemies.
Nurture Your Relationships: Building relationships in GTAIV is an integral part of the game. Without properly building relationships with the people you meet, you're missing a huge part of the game. Be sure to take up your friends' requests to hang out with them, and try to cater to what they like to increase their fondness of you. You should also reciprocate with calls of your own to hang out. As far as women are concerned, you should definitely pay attention to your relationships with them, but be responsible! There's nothing a woman dislikes more than an overly-aggressive man. Well... most of them, anyway.

First of all, this PC port of GTA IV is trash. First Generation RAGE engine is fundamentally broken on modern PCs and requires a lot of troubleshooting and mods to get it to be playable. The modding community recently solved this game. Follow Gillian's Modding Guide for GTA IV to save your sanity. FusionFix and DVXK vulkan mod fixes most issues for most people.GTA IV as a game is considered one of the best games of all time for a reason. For the time it was a mind blowing leap in graphics and in physics, and it still holds up in 2026. It's insane that it ran on 512mb of GDDR3 on an Xbox 360 and the fact that it was only in development for 4 years. There is an incredible amount of detail in this game that rivals RDR2. As an example, you can steal an ice cream truck and it has different songs you can play like a police siren. The story and characters are the best rockstar story along with Red Dead Redemption.I don't care what anybody says, the driving in GTA IV is the best to me. Every car has different handling and weight to them, going fast and making a sharp turn can make you lose control of your vehicle, it's very realistic and satisfying. Pulling off a drift in this game is the best feeling. GTA 4 is just a really fun game in general because of these systems. Also the car damage/deformation system is MUCH MUCH better than V. Cars actually bend out of shape and take damage if hit really hard, they blow up easier, and it's harder to drive a broken car because it reduces your speed and your ability to turn. It feels like Rockstar tuned back the physics and the car damage physics to streamline GTA online. There are so many interiors in the game that you can just explore. You can go to an internet cafe, go bowling, go play pool, go eat some food to restore your health at a restaurant. it makes the city feel more alive unlike GTA V with 0 overworld interiors, 0 food vendors. You can literally go into the hospital. A lot of props are destructible as well. It doesn't feel like there is any wasted space in the city. I also swear that the pedestrians behaviors in GTA 4 are much smarter over 5, each type of ped has their own personality, every single pedestrian and cars don't run and vanish and turn into a ghost town when you shoot somebody so you can go to another street and jack a car to get away. Female peds actually fight back too.The physics in the game are over the top but crazy fun to play around with. Euphoria's implementation in this game is still top tier and never makes the game boring, and I wish more games used NaturalMotion's Euphoria. Peds don't have a default dying animation so every single gunfight is different. In fact, most peds will survive getting shot and try to get up and limp away to safety. A lot of this is just simply missing from V.
A truly great game for those who prefer a grounded and mature experience. I absolutely love its depressing, heavy atmosphere and gritty narrative; it feels far more personal and impactful than any other entry in the series. It makes perfect sense when you consider that Dan Houser mentioned he was going through a difficult period while writing the story, as that raw, somber energy permeates every corner of Liberty City. Whenever I’m in a similar heavy mood, I find myself returning to Niko’s journey—it’s the perfect companion for those darker, reflective days. I really wish Rockstar would make more mature games like this and Max Payne, as they truly excel at this style, and I hope GTA VI carries a similar emotional depth in some way.
I know GTA IV fanboys have a reputation for absolutely GLAZING this game but I mean... when you're talking about THE greatest game of all time it's kind of hard not too, right?Real review though, I grew up in NJ and had the unique experience of having my dad take me on field work all throughout Northeastern NJ back in the 2000s, as well as going into NYC not too rarely growing up. Then about a year ago I started dating a girl up in North Jersey which led to me spending a TON of time wandering around up there and also making a few trips to NYC, specifically Chinatown. I even drove in a couple times. When I say that this is absolutely unequivocally the best and most immersive world/map that has ever existed in a video game I do not say that lightly. Like I love GTA:SA and Saints Row 2's maps, I think they're great video game maps, but GTA IV is nearly like being dropped down in Google Street view with how realistic a depiction of the region it is.GTA IV is also a uniquely dark entry in the series, BUT, for anyone who finds that to be a downside, TBoGT completely flips that if you wanted a more GTA 5 adjacent experience with flashy colors and bombastic missions and stuff. So I still wouldn't write off GTA IV entirely unless you've given the DLCs (specifically TBoGT as it's the most transformative) a shot.
Grand Theft Auto IV revolves around a character who is deceived by the rhetoric often conveyed to illegal immigrants and his journey to discover who once betrayed him. Players will control Niko to many different places and continue to experience uniqueness in a large and renovated world. In particular, the map in the game has been adjusted to compare to the world in the previous version, and some limited vehicles, such as airplanes, no longer appear in this game. But that doesn’t stop players from enjoying the beauty of the game, trying to experience life in a completely new environment, and discovering the fascinating story of Niko’s past.
