Super Mario 64 is a beloved adventure game where players embark on a journey to rescue Princess Ridge. Players must travel to the world of Bowser's minions, using skillful maneuvers such as running, jumping, and double jumping to upgrade their power stars. Utilize these power stars to defeat the evil Bowser and rescue the princess. Note that not only are there enemy minions in the levels, but also your allies. Ask your friends for help and make good use of their items to solve puzzles, progress through levels, and collect hidden power stars.
Unlike many of its predecessors, Super Mario 64 uses a health point system, represented by a pie shape consisting of eight segments. If Mario has taken damage, he can replenish his health either by collecting three types of coins—yellow, which replenishes one segment; red, equal to two yellow coins and which replenishes two segments; and blue, equal to five yellow coins and which replenishes five segments, by walking through a spinning heart or by jumping into water. Underwater, Mario's health instead represents how long he can hold his breath, slowly diminishing while underwater and replenishing when he surfaces.Finishing a course grants Mario an extra life for every 50 yellow coins the player collected, and extra life mushrooms are hidden in various places such as trees and poles—they may either chase Mario through the air or fall to the ground, avoiding Mario and disappear shortly if not collected.
In absence of the power-ups normally found in previous games, such as the Super Mushroom and Fire Flower, three colors of translucent blocks—red, green, and blue—appear throughout many stages. Three switches of the same colors, found in three secret areas located in either stages or the castle itself, turn their corresponding blocks solid and permanently allow Mario to obtain three types of special cap power-ups throughout all of the stages. The Wing Cap allows Mario to fly after doing a triple jump or being shot from a cannon; the Metal Cap makes him immune to enemies, fire, noxious gases, allows him to withstand wind and water currents, perform on-land moves underwater, and have unlimited air capacity underwater; and the Vanish Cap renders him partially immaterial and invulnerable, and allows him to walk through some obstacles. Another implicit powerup is the shell remains after stomping a Koopa Troopa, which Mario can use to run over enemies, and surf on water, lava, and quicksand.

Mario: Mario, the only playable character in this game, has many new moves in this new game as well as some moves from the previous games. Since this is his first ever 3-D platformer, he can wall-jump, triple-jump, and do a whole lot of other things that he now uses in the current games.
Dorrie: This friendly sea dragon helps Mario out by getting across the water in the Hazy Maze Cave area to get a Power Star and even a secret course.
MIPS: Appears when Mario gets 15 Stars and gives Mario an extra Star if he catches him in the castle basement. He also appears in the same place and does the same thing again when you have 50 Stars.
Princess Peach's Letter: The Princess has gotten trapped inside the castle walls, now Mario will have to save her by collecting Power Stars to defeat Bowser.
Toad: Toads will give Mario a handful of hints along the way and will also give him a secret Power Star sometimes.
Yoshi: After you collect 120 Power Stars, Yoshi will give Mario one hundred 1-Up Mushrooms atop the Castle and an upgraded Triple Jump and then jump into the waterfall. Yoshi makes an error "Mario!!! It that really you???" instead of "Mario!!! Is that really you???

Avoid fall damage with a ground-pound: Normally, when Mario falls off a cliff and hits the ground, it will hurt him. However, if you ground-pound when Mario is just about to make contact, he won't sustain any damage.
Healing waters: You might have noticed that Mario's health gauge doubles as his air supply when he's swimming. This being the case, if you get hurt in a level that has deep water in it, you can always dive underwater and then return to the surface to heal up to perfect health.
Wall Jump to get ahead: One of the most important moves in Mario's repertoire is the Wall Jump. He can bounce back and forth up between two walls to get to a higher platform. If you see a doorway that's seemingly out of reach or a coin just a little too far above your head try jumping against a neaby wall and see if that helps you bridge the gap.
Control the water: You can control the water level when jumping into the Wet-Dry World painting. Give a short jump into the painting and the water will be low. Make a high jump into the painting and the water level will be high.
Control time in the Tick Tock Clock level: To get into the Tick Tock Clock level, you need to jump through a portal that looks like a clock face. Thing is, you can control the speed at which the platforms in Tick Tock Clock move or even stop them entirely by jumping into the clock at the right time. Specifically depending on where the long, fast-moving minute hand is located.
A landmark of early 3D platforming, this adventure spreads its challenges across fifteen distinct worlds, each built around movement tricks, branching routes, and well-hidden objectives. Bowser locks six stars in every stage, and grabbing one hundred coins adds another to the count, giving you plenty of flexibility in how you tackle each run.
