Useful Tips:

Hollow Knight is a very good Metroidvania game. Like any Metroidvania, some areas require you to gain certain abilities to enter, and once you gain the ability it's very obvious what you have to do. If you find yourself leaving and entering a room, trying all sorts of things to cross an obstacle, it's probably because you haven't gotten the necessary ability yet.

If the game feels very easy and slow, that's because you're at the start of the game.

If you die, all your money (called geo) is left behind and you get a debuff.

If you die twice before getting your geo back, you lose all your geo.

There is an NPC that can help you get your geo back without you having to go where you lost it.

You can attack up and down. You need to jump to attack down.

You can look up and down if you hold the up or down button for a while.

There are no 1-hit kills. Nothing in the game can kill you if you have full health.

Sitting heals you to full health, removes any extra health, saves the game, updates the map, and sets your respawn point.

Quitting the game also saves the game.

Some enemies respawn when you enter a room a second time.

Some enemies stay dead until you sit on a bench.

Hot springs fill your SOUL if you stand still.

Any item that can be given to a character can only be spent by giving it to that character. There is no point in saving such items for later.

You can find a lot of geo in unexplored areas and fighting bosses. You will rarely need to farm enemies for geo.

Pay attention to visuals and sounds. The location of many things is hinted with subtle visuals or strange noises.

Most map markers are placed automatically.

The four colored map markers (scarab marker, shell marker, gleaming marker, and token marker) have be placed manually by opening your inventory and going to the full map.

There's always some sort of reward after a boss. If you didn't find anything, you missed it.

At first, I thought this game was overhyped since I was bored out of my mind for the first hour or two. As a person who has never played a Metroidvania up until this point, I grew tired of all the exploring that I had to do and how the game seemingly gives you no direction (except for, of course, telling you how to attack and control your character). However, I'm glad I gave this game a chance, because the gameplay quickly became much more entertaining, showcasing its beautiful art style, difficult (yet fair and rewarding) bosses, an amazing soundtrack, and fun and, well, interesting characters (to say the least).Oh, and despite how often I got lost exploring and trying to find something to do, I grew (to somewhat) appreciate and understand why people like this aspect of the game, since it gave me more of a chance to admire and observe the different environments/areas of the game.After playing almost 100 hours of this game, I now might finally have the confidence and the skill to defeat Gruz Mother.

I bought this game because my four-year-old daughter liked the creepy skeleton bug man.I'm 40, and for the last 34 years or so I have consistently sucked at any game demanding any degree of speed or coordination. I remember the first Castlevania and the first Metroid and I remember sucking at both of them. I play RPGs or turn-based strategy games like Civ. I had never played a souls-like before and I had no idea what I was getting into. This game is hard. as. hell. When you beat it, the game congratulates you on your "achievement" and I felt that word in my bones. Now, 250 hours later I can beat AbsRad on ascended. I'm at 109% with only pantheon 5 to go. I beat the path of pain and I'm considering putting that on CV. I think this game taught my kid that parents also struggle and must persevere to accomplish their goals... But, I enjoyed every minute of the grind because this game is a masterpiece, from it's level and art design to the music to the cryptic lore. This is one of those games that reminds me why I love gaming, and I'm glad I got to share something so special with my daughter. We can't wait for Silksong.

The best game I've ever played, amazing story, fluid gameplay, NPC's well planned to the point that some of them become special for you, don't try to find imperfections in this game, it's impossible (Except Zote, he's definitely a mistake), the narrative of the game keeps you immersed for hours, and with each new area discovered, things got even more interesting. I was moved by the story of some NPC's and each ending is simply epic, especially if you understood the whole story of the game until the end. I started playing this game in the summer of 2021, in one of the worst phases of my life, sinking into my depression day after day, I didn't eat right and I just thought about getting home soon and going to sleep, so my best friend encouraged me to play Hollow Knight on call with him, each playing their own save and helping the other when one was stuck somewhere, and it's inexplicable how much this game did for me. I came home from work exhausted, and my moment of happiness was opening steam and playing the game until I needed to sleep. As the days went by I was able to eat better, I could handle the events that happened during the day, I even managed to go back to college, that's when I realized how much hollow knight did me good, it gave me strength to continue at a time that I had already given up on myself. Recently after 142 hours of gameplay (103 hours on main save) I finally completed the 63 achievements (some friends called me crazy), it was difficult and required a lot of dedication and practice, but I feel like I should do this in gratitude and respect for the game that possibly changed my life. Hollow Knight is amazing and I assure you that the money and time invested in this game is worth A LOT. All my thanks to Team Cherry for this wonderful game, and to my best friend for always supporting me and also motivating me to play this masterpiece.
