The resource system is very realistic—you must constantly stock up on ammunition, grenades, medkits, and even gasoline. You can buy a wide variety of items from the "merchant," different guns use different ammunition, and there are different ways to kill enemies, heal, build shields, and upgrade, as well as various mini-games. There are about 30 skills to upgrade, and you must choose from them when you gain skill points. I even considered deleting it because it's just too addictive. I played the free version, usually with airplane mode on. Honestly, as long as you play no more than two hours a day, you don't need to spend real money on in-game items—but then again, this game is really hard to put down.
