Osmos
Introduction

Osmos is a highly engaging devouring and evolution game where players begin their journey as a Mote. You control your Mote by ejecting matter, moving it in different directions. Be careful, as your Mote will shrink during this process. Devour smaller Motes to grow. As your Mote grows, nearby available Motes will change color to blue. As you progress through the levels, more new particles will appear, such as Antimatter, Repulsor, Impasse, and Sentient. Players must remain cautious, moving their particles slowly rather than forcefully, making the game more challenging.

Gameplay of Osmos:

The aim of the game is to propel oneself, a single-celled organism ("Mote"), into other smaller motes to absorb them. Colliding with a mote larger than the player will cause the player to be absorbed, resulting in a game over. Motes smaller than the player are blue, while motes bigger than the player are red. Changing course is done by expelling mass. Due to conservation of momentum, this results in the player's mote moving away from the expelled mass, but also in one's own mote shrinking.

There are three different "zones" of levels in Osmos: In the "sentient" levels, the goal is to prevail over active motes of various types that hunt and absorb other motes, including the player. Hunting them typically involves absorbing as many inactive motes as possible before chasing down the active ones with the extra mass one has gained.

In the "ambient" levels, the player's mote typically floats in a large area surrounded by inactive motes, and must become the largest or simply very large. Variations on this theme involve, for instance, starting the game as a very small mote surrounded by many larger, fast moving motes, or the presence of "antimatter" motes which shrink normal motes during collision no matter which one was originally bigger, or starting the game stuck in a huge, densely packed area with a large number of other motes without much space to move about and having to nudge other motes out of the way by ejecting mass at them.

In the "force" levels, special motes ("Attractors") influence other motes with a force similar to gravitation. The player has to take into account orbital physics when planning movement in order to save mass when changing course. In these levels, the game optionally assists the player with a course trajectory tool that plots the mote's course, up to a short time in the future. Force levels are complicated in various ways, including levels with mutually repelling attractors, attractors bouncing randomly around an area full of motes, several "strata" of bodies in retrograde rotation about an attractor, and attractors orbiting other attractors.

Strategies of Osmos:

Let's do the time warp: Early Osmos levels are concerned only with movement and absorption, but time warping is soon introduced. Left/right flicks and drags slow/speed up time, respectively, enabling player-controlled difficulty adjustments. Slowing down time can give you breathing space to think and complete a level at your own pace; as noted, there are no penalties for dallying - Osmos is structured more like a puzzle game, but with an arcade feeling. However, slowing time can be a double-edged sword. Do so on levels that are slow-moving and you'll find it hard to get a sense of the trajectories of on-screen elements. You may also find the game less intuitive, with the 'engine response' of your mote becoming quite sluggish. Therefore, find a sweet spot - a level where you're comfortable with the controls and still get a sense of movement from the motes; and don't be afraid to frequently adjust time, including speeding it up when travelling a long distance when there are no nearby threats to your mote's survival.

Mastering the Odyssey: Initially, the only solo mode unlocked in Osmos is Odyssey, a 'guided tour' through arena types. It's recommended you complete this before tackling arena-specific level sets in Arcade. However, the last few levels in Odyssey are tough, and so the Osmos developers provided an 'out', unlocking Arcade's Ambient, Antimatter and Impasse levels on completing the 'Floating' stage within Odyssey, and the Sentient and Repulsor levels on completing 'The Chase'.Sometimes, patience, planning, and a firm grasp of Osmos mechanics relating to propulsion and time-warping will see you through levels, but there are specific methods for tackling tougher levels in each arena type…

Ambient: This is 'vanilla' Osmos. To win, simply master movement skills and be precise. Time-warping can help.First, slow time, assess the situation, and pick a mote to absorb. Next, return to regular speed and get a feeling for relative velocities. Tap to shift your mote to an interception path, and speed time back up until close. Slow time down again, zoom, make precise adjustments, absorb and repeat.

Antimatter: These levels introduce dark antimatter motes. They grow when absorbing other antimatter motes but contract when absorbing a standard mote.Approach these arenas like Ambient ones, but be more patient. Often, if you survive and wait around for matter and antimatter to collide, you can win by doing very little. (By contrast, waiting around in an Ambient arena can result in defeat through chain reactions causing other motes to become far bigger than yours.)

Player Comments of Osmos:

Beautiful. looks amazing, sounds amazing, the physics is great, it's utterly mesmerising. It's like rocket science by intuition, no maths required. If I told you in the orbits level "to increase your periapsis distance, increase forward velocity at apoapsis", that probably won't mean much to you but hey, you'll work it out. Now think - that's how they get to the moon.

Possibly the best mobile game of all time. This was a standout gem from the old iOS days, and it has aged like a fine wine after nearly 17 years (I feel old). Perfect atmosphere, outstanding presentation, and endlessly relaxing. Played on a tablet w/ headphones, the immersion is unbeatable and makes for a very pleasant & deeply meditative experience. Truly a timeless masterpiece, one for the mobile-gaming history books. 10/10.

This game is dangerous! It is the right balance between relaxing and suspenseful so if you're not careful your phone can go from 100% to 20%, you've missed eating the entire day, and you're weekend is over. lol In all reality, it's an awesome game. It disappeared for a bit so I'm glad it's back. Slow and steady wins the blob race. I personally absolutely love the orbital levels. I would highly recommend you give it a try if you're looking for a peaceful no rush gaming experience.

Great fun to play and beautifully presented with stunning graphics and mesmerising music tracks on each level. The controls are well implemented and easy to get the hang of. Plenty of levels to master and you must complete these first before you are able to unlock the arcade mode. This is a very well thought out and implemented game with a well balanced mixture strategy and all in a fabulous game that will keep you entertained and coming back for more and more, highly addictive, so beware.

Conclusion:

Osmos is the game for you. Enjoy the soothing award winning soundtrack, while you journey through the worlds to evolve from a cosmic giant to a mere speck of dust. Are you ready to show the universe what you are made of? Download Osmos and embark on the adventure that will allow you to show the universe what it is to be the best of the best.
