Prince of Persia The Sands of Time

Prince of Persia The Sands of Time
Introduction

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a beloved action-adventure game where players control an unnamed prince on a journey to defeat the traitor Vizier. Along the way, you'll encounter various dangerous terrains and enemies. Players must skillfully traverse platforms using leaps and jumps, and utilize the magical power of the Time Dagger to reverse time when mistakes are made, thus increasing their margin for error. As the game progresses, players can also enhance the prince's health and energy by drinking water from different locations and collecting sand from defeated enemies, making each level easier.

Gameplay of Prince of Persia The Sands of Time:

Prince of Persia The Sands of Time is an action-adventure puzzle-platformer. The player controls the main protagonist, an unnamed Prince from a kingdom in Persia. Environments are seen through a controllable third-person view. The camera's view changes to different positions triggered by entering certain areas or performing actions. The Prince can be moved in all directions, and he is able to manipulate large objects such as blocks and levers connected to mechanisms. His health and power meter are represented in the top left-hand corner of the screen. The Prince restores health by drinking water from pools and fountains; total loss of health from injuries by traps or enemies results in a game over. Collecting Sands increases the Prince's power, and drinking from hidden magic fountains increases the Prince's maximum health. During several points in the game, the Prince is assisted by his companion Farah, controlled by artificial intelligence, who fires a bow at enemies, though her arrows can also hit the Prince if he strays into her line of fire. Monsters will attack her, and if she is killed, the game also ends.

During exploration, the Prince navigates areas filled with traps: these traps include spike pits, arrow traps, wall-mounted blades and saws, and spinning spiked stakes. The Prince's main contextual move is wall-running, an action where he runs up onto and along a wall for a set distance, either to land on or jump off to a platform. The Prince's other acrobatic abilities include climbing along and across ledges, walking along beams, swinging on and jumping from poles, jumping onto and between pillars, and swinging on ropes. Large environmental puzzles are encountered during the Prince's journey, extending across multiple areas in large rooms. Many puzzles are cooperative, requiring Farah's help to complete them. In combat, the Prince fights monsters created by the Sands infecting the Palace's inhabitants with dual wielded melee weapons, his sword and Dagger of Time, each controlled by a single button. With the sword, a single command contextually triggers different moves depending on position and directional movement, while other special moves such as a somersault attack and bouncing off walls into enemies require additional commands. After being damaged by the sword, enemies can only be killed by stabbing them with the Dagger of Time, which gathers up the Sands inside them.

The Sands the Prince collects from enemies and the environment are tied to his magical abilities, themselves connected with the Dagger. The most basic (and defensive) power is Rewind, the ability for the Prince to rewind time by up to ten seconds to reverse fatal game-ending mistakes such as missteps in platforming, getting overwhelmed by enemies or losing Farah. In combat, once the Dagger develops special power "tanks", the Prince can also use any of three more offensive Sand Powers that can slow time immediately around him, freeze time for a single enemy, or freeze time completely so that he can attack his enemies at great speed while they are unable to move. Each use of power uses up one Sand Tank, and when empty, all powers become inaccessible until more Sand is collected. More powerful abilities, such as freezing time, are powered by Power Tanks. Increasing their number unlocks new Sand-based powers. Starting out with a small amount of Sand available to him, its capacity can be increased by collecting Sand from enemies, along with Sand Clouds scattered around the palace. Large columns of Sand within the Palace grant visions of future areas and act as save points.[

Player Comments of Prince of Persia The Sands of Time:

Just fantastic. One of my favorite action-adventure games of the PS2 era, though not without its fairly major flaws.

Movement feels amazing, and chaining acrobatics through long parkour sections feels really awesome and fluid, just as good as it was back in the day. The combat, though, feels as bad as it also was back in the day. There's no way around it, combat in this game is pretty bad. It's incredibly repetitive, and I hate when a game goes "actually the enemies are invincible if you just keep hitting them forever, you gotta do this one thing to permanently destroy them", and essentially 100% of the enemies in this game (except for minor annoyances like scarabs, birds and bats) are just like that, constantly getting up until you dagger-of-time them when they're down. The encounters also drag on and on for much longer than they should. For the entirety of the second half of the game, every time you think combat's over and more enemies spawn you will always think "oh seriously, more?!". Lastly, another major problem regarding the combat is how your sidekick in the game can be killed by the monsters and that is an instant game over, so you're forced to babysit her during these portions. For the vast majority of the game this isn't really a problem, but it suddenly becomes your biggest issue during the final major mob fight in the game: the elevator section in the Tower of Dawn. I think I had 5 or so 'game overs' because they kept focusing her instead of me, and she dies incredibly fast when that happens.

The soundtrack is extremely good: there's no way you won't add some of these tracks to your playlist: and the visuals are awesome and aged very well. I did play using the "Fix Compilation" mod, which allows for widescreen and high resolutions, and the game looks just incredible.

The game's set pieces are mostly great. Most are hits, very few are complete misses, worst of all being the infamous "bring the crystal things to the top", with a very british soldier screaming instructions at you. That is just an awful segment and should've been completely reworked out outright removed, as it really brings down the game's flow real bad. On the other hand, the 'Halls of Learning' and the immediately after observatory segments are much, much better examples of puzzle segments that are neat and greatly integrated with both the Prince's move set and the style of the game as a whole.

Overall, it's a highly recommended "seamless adventure" type of game. Not sure if I'm uninformed, but I don't really know how to properly define these games where you go through a mostly continuous journey with no major breaks or time skips (think Half-Life games, Portal games, Resident Evil 4, Ico, Inside and so on). I really love this kind of game, and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time most certainly stands out as one of the great ones. I just find it hard to believe a complete playthrough can go unscathed without its "okay, I'm done with this combat" moment.

Conclusion:

The game’s main appeal is its well-constructed plot-driven storyline, combined with the battle engine and the Prince’s acrobatic abilities, which enable him to solve puzzles and cross seemingly impossible terrain. On top of this, there is the magical time element, which is what takes Prince of Persia: SoT from a good game to a great game. By using his dagger, the Prince can turn back time, rewinding the game a few seconds. You can also slow time, and even freeze it. While this sounds incredible – it means you will never die, right? – it isn’t that simplistic, and you have to time your use of the dagger really well to get the most out of it.
