I have to be honest and say that it was the story more than anything that made me want to keep playing The Last Sovereign. The thing is, the story is so deep that I am not wanting to do it an injustice here with my spoiler-free description of it, but I will give it my best shot.
Basically, there was this guy, The Incubus King who tried to take over the world, while he failed to do so. He left his mark, took some parts and the world is still in a bit of turmoil after the war.
You play as “The Chosen One” who was “blessed by a divine being. You along with a colorful cast of characters end up on an epic quest to save the day. The story is full of great characters, good writing, and some great stuff such as betrayal and sex that actually has meaning to the overall plot.
I have to be honest and say that you can tell after about five minutes and the first few quests that The Last Sovereign is a game that is made in RPG Maker. I do not mean that as a form of disrespect or as a negative, it is just the game has that RPG Maker feels to it. You have lots of main story quests that you can do, but I would advise that you have a guide on hand as the game can be rather cryptic in places. The extra areas that you can go to are pretty brutal, but if you are a high enough level and know what you are doing, they are manageable.
The combat is your basic stuff, but still quite fun. I liked how the game did not end up being a grind fest and was more about playing so that the story unfolded, I found that I leveled up in a very natural way.
The presentation on offer here uses the assets that are mostly available in RPG Maker. However, I do feel that The Last Sovereign has its own vibe going on. The writing is so well done that it is very easy to overlook the fact that you may have seen these assets before as you get fully invested in what is going on. The CG stuff that is on offer here is great and again, as I was already into the story, I liked it even more.
