Reviews:

Thank you so much Lydia for creating this game, it is one of my favourite rpg maker games. It really filled a void for me after playing all the classics like mad father, ib, witch's house, etc. The main characters are lovely with their own depth and the puzzles were enjoyable to solve. Not too easy not too hard. I must say I highly appreciate the focus on friendship, especially between male and female characters which I sadly don't see a lot. There was no forced romantic bond (but if you ship, I don't judge), just wholesome chemistry between all of them. Another reason why I love this game.Oh and I adored that role reversal moments  we had, with Luna being the one using brute force and protecting/carrying Neil (fav part), without reducing him to just a damsel in distress. Refreshing writing! I can only praise this game I look forward to the remake, thank you again.

I would've liked to play a short, stand-alone game that's supposed to be the Epilogue to Midnight Train, but it's safe to say that most would've forgotten what happened by the time it comes out. I like that they never magically cured her muteness. There were a lot of dark themes, but at least they weren't carelessly mixed in, and the severity and mental health actually affected the characters instead of having it as just background. Unfortunately, not all games do this. Diana, Apollo, Celes (Celeste), and Selene were great characters, I just wish we got to see Purity (Lucine) and Liberty at least get some form of redemption/punishment. I'm guessing the police catch them, though.I liked that Justice I got trapped in his own curse and died trying, since such a terrible curse is... so terrible. I also like that the mission for justice was continued after Black Gear fell, and that Luna helped make the police force better while not losing sight of her other goal. Visiting the train station everyday is commitment.  And I like that Neil and the others had to wait a year to escape, instead of right away or only months after. And the fact that they guided the victims out proved that they also kept their real goal in mind.I would've liked more explanation on how Apollo survived and that eyeball... I know that the other eyeballs were like Apollo, but did the bodies continue living while their eyeball grew separetly? Was their real punishment to have their soul trapped in their eyeball after death and either try to escape or stop others/merge with trees and... becomes an eye-tree? I could theorize for days. In fact, I will.I like how it was a bittersweet ending, but that after all that, they give you closure. Closure was the reward after the 8 hours.

Just finished the full game and I really enjoyed it! It reminded me of the OG horror RPG maker games that I love. Each chapter took me about ~90 minutes each to complete (so about ~6-7 hours in total). I saw that Lydia was planning to remake the game, so I'm excited to see that (last update I saw of it was March 16th on their Twitter/X account). Although, I wonder if Lydia ever plans to release her games on Steam?

Midnight Train

Final Verdict:

Midnight Train is a turn-based mystery game for mature players who are not afraid of a little blood and gore. This episodic game was created by an independent developer named Lydia. Within four chapters, you must figure out why passengers of a train suddenly disappear after it stops at a mysterious town. In addition to fantasy and horror, the game tackles serious topics such as suicide, abuse, and torture so players should proceed with caution.
