Fans of strategy games shouldn't miss this gem of a title: Ash of Gods: The Way!
Build winning decks of warriors, equipment, and spells from four different factions in this story-driven tactical card combat game. Battle your way through a series of major tournaments, each with their own opponents, battlefields, and even rules. Earn new cards and upgrade your favorites, then combine them into any number of decks: you’re free to experiment as much as you like! Do prepare carefully for key battles with major characters: you’ll only get a few chances before defeat will change the course of the story, though the game continues…
All the while you will meet new characters, have conversations, and make decisions that will affect the fate of the entire world.
You play as Finn, a young man whose only hope of preventing a neighboring nation from attacking his home is to master the card game they use to teach aristocrats the art of warfare: the Way. Infiltrate the tournaments they hold, and you can get close to their elite commanders. What you do once you get there will be up to you. Just remember, your decisions have consequences!
The core gameplay is deceptively simple: every turn you can play one warrior, and one support card, then all your units will advance towards the enemy and attack if they can! But the challenge comes in what combinations you choose, how you build your deck, and when you hold back cards for a better opportunity. Your opponents play by the same rules… most of the time. Each battle can have different rules or special features that can be exploited by smart deck building!

Diverse Card Options: The system will bring you different cards to choose from. These cards will contain your strength, skills, and fighting techniques. All are random, and you will not know what abilities you will possess in advance.
Experimental Deck Freedom: You can combine different skills together to create new skills with superior power. Sometimes, you will be lucky to receive limited skills with the greatest power.
Card Upgrade System: You can also upgrade your cards to make them stronger and possess superior abilities. The more you upgrade your cards, the more powerful you will be.
Unique Tournament Opponents: The game will bring you different tournaments so you can flex your level and bring your troops to assert your position with other players in the world. The first tournaments that are brought to you will be based on your level to create the most fair matches.
Varied Battle Environments: Each match will be on different battlefields. You will admire the large-scale and extremely professional battlefields. Each battlefield will have different contexts to give you different experiences without making you bored.
Dynamic Rule Changes: At each stage of development, you will possess new skills suitable for your civilization. You will see your development through each stage of the kingdom’s development.

Card Acquisition and Upgrades: One of the most satisfying aspects of Ash of Gods is the card acquisition and enhancement system. Winning matches and advancing through tournaments yields rewards, unlocking new cards and opportunities to upgrade your existing collection. Players can customize their decks with upgraded versions of favorite cards, creating potent combinations that can surprise opponents. The process of fine-tuning your deck is where the complexity and satisfaction of the game lie. With a multitude of cards at your disposal, players are encouraged to think critically about their play style. Whether you prefer an aggressive rush of low-cost warriors or a carefully measured strategy with strategic spells, the game caters to various play styles, making deck-building a deeply personalized experience.
An Engaging Narrative Experience: Beyond its gameplay mechanics, Ash of Gods: The Way weaves an intricate narrative that draws players into its world. The story unfolds through choices, intertwining player decisions with the broader canvas of the game’s lore. Along your journey, the rich narratives explore themes of morality, ambition, and sacrifice, leading to the variety of endings that give depth and meaning to your choices.Player interactions can influence character relationships and alter the trajectory of the story, ensuring a deeply engaging experience tailored to your actions. The artful storytelling complements the gameplay, creating an immersive atmosphere where your strategic choices resonate through the unfolding narrative.
Exploration and Discoveries Await: In this world, players are not limited to a singular path. Exploring various routes through the tournaments reveals hidden secrets and unique challenges, rewarding those who delve deeper into the game. Each faction has its own lore, and players are encouraged to uncover these backstories, enriching the gameplay experience. As you navigate through your journey, expect to encounter a spectrum of challenges that keep you on your toes. Curated battlefields and evolving AI adversaries create a dynamic gameplay environment that ensures every match is a test of ingenuity and skill.

This is a solid, fun game. The gameplay is unique, and does a really good job of keeping aspects of each of the major factions relevant throughout the game. You get stronger and gain more options, but you still don't lose a footing in strategies that worked before, which is a tough balance to strike. One of the major factions, the last one in the main game, is clearly weaker than the others - on hard mode at least - but even they provide a few useful options. The story integrates with the gameplay in interesting ways, and contains distinct, meaningful arcs for almost all major characters. I have some issues with the ending - it's not especially clear how or why reputation plays into the final outcome - but it's at least a satisfying reward if you manage to overcome the game's challenges. There are a few fights that stand out as extremely difficult, but overall, almost every fight hits the balance of interesting, but surmountable challenge. Most of the negative reviews I've seen boil down to some form of "this game is too hard" - especially the ones complaining about rng. If you have a solid grasp of tactics, you can 1-2 try most battles of the game on hard mode, even through poor rng.
I have been following this game for a couple of years now, played every demo and the recent Prologue — and I have a huge respect for the devs who were very attentive to the community all this time and never left my questions or feedback unanswered. They have also added to the release build a lot of nice features players asked for like restarting a battle and slowing down enemy's turn, and I was even able to continue my save from the Prologue. I am really thankful for that.As for the game, I am in the third tournament now, and I am really happy to say I am having a good time. I am not a big fan of card games, to be honest, but this one is quite addictive and doesn't really feel like a card game to me. The combat system is very simple but gives you a lot of options with two decks, different factions and card upgrades. All the fights in the game are unique, and it is really fun to rework your decks to find the strategy to beat a puzzle. The game encourages you to experiment, there's no penalty for changing upgrades and factions, I even tried to mix bandits and berkanans, and it worked great in some particular fights. The tournaments are also quite different. I haven't had a chance to play with Gell deck yet but I really like new mechanics of the third tournament like capturing points.
A very fun card based strategy/puzzle game with non linearity that isn't really needed for a game like this, nor the focus, is a welcome addition nonetheless, due to the story often giving you incentives to fight optional battles that will result in narrative benefits, as well as mechanical. Definitely a worthy use of time, with fun dialogue, well done art, and solid voice acting overall, outside of small issues I had with the main character's emotional heights not being reached verbally. If the price seems a bit steep, I would still recommend you at least give the game a try on sale, you likely will not regret it.
