Bad North: Jotunn Edition is a war strategy game with Roguelite elements. Players take on the role of a tribe leader, guiding their people to defend their island kingdom against Viking invasions. Since islands are randomly generated, each with unique terrain, players must deploy various armies based on the terrain and the direction of the Viking attack. Your soldiers are controlled by intelligent AI, reducing player fatigue; you simply issue commands, and your warriors will fight according to the situation. As the game progresses, players can upgrade their people, turning them into battle-hardened warriors, gaining a greater advantage in defense.
Bad North focuses on real-time tactics gameplay. The main goals are to defend the player's kingdom from the attacking Viking invaders who killed the king and to guide the island's people to evacuate. The procedurally generated islands are divided into multiple tiles and have houses with Vikings attacking from any corner, so the player's strategy must be well planned to get the opportunity to save the people from the enemy by protecting the houses. The Viking invaders will chuck torches into the houses, and if they burn completely, the player will not earn coins for those houses. Coins are needed to get upgrades for units and level up commanders' defenses. The player can also pick up items (represented as question marks in the map) and add new commanders to the army. The game offers Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulty options. A "Very Hard" option can be unlocked by completing the game on Hard. A free expansion for Bad North called "Jotunn Edition" was released in July 2019.

The first highlight of Bad North: Jotunn Edition is its endless gameplay, thanks to the leveling system and the scale of the battles. They use various resources, thereby creating isolated islands with difficult and complex terrain, creating many good advantages for countless defensive battles. Not only that, but each player’s activity greatly influences the overall strategy; even the enemy can arbitrarily change tactics to create an element of surprise during the attack. Unfortunately, the whole gameplay only emphasizes defensive tactics but requires a lot of skill and judgment in all levels or special and rich terrain.
Being in different types of terrain can make players more creative and flexible, but after each map reset, the enemy’s appearance direction is different. However, the player can stop the game and look at the battlefield from multiple angles of the island, then build various appropriate tactical steps and resumes the game. The whole thing can be simple on the surface, as the player taps on each unit and directs them to designated points. Also, its depth is endless, as each army has many random elements to determine victory in each clash. The interesting thing is that each unit has different uses, and players can stack them together for better performance in each campaign.
The diversity of combat units is a prominent feature in Bad North, as their abilities can be boosted thanks to the terrain and its designated location. However, the downside is that the player cannot spawn more units available, but they need to defeat the armies with the available troops on each island. In the future, armies will be automatically upgraded over time, and their shape or strength will improve significantly. Not only that, but special skills or support equipment will be widely equipped, and players can take advantage of the terrain factor for absolute combat performance. What’s impressive is that players can heal combat units in various special ways, an effective method against countless armies constantly attacking.

Don’t just defend houses, defend the shores: Every battle in Bad North has the promise of granting you gold to upgrade your units, provided the houses on the island aren’t destroyed. To make it to the end of the game, it’s crucial to earn as much money as possible as you go, but that doesn’t mean you should just try to position your troops around houses to defend them.In fact, it’s much easier to try and use your units to defend the entire island. Enemies that are already on foot are unpredictable. They can move anywhere they want. As they arrive by boat, though, you can surround them and even control where they’ll have to move to defend themselves. Another important thing to note about fighting on the shore is that you can actually push enemies back into the water, and doing so instantly kills them.
Play in near-constant slow motion: Whenever you start to issue a command in Bad North, the action slows down to a crawl. Use this to your advantage. Select units, even if you don’t want to move them, just so you can watch the action play out slowly and read and react to new developments. The danger in doing this, of course, is that you might have to issue a command which will then speed things up, perhaps when you don’t want to. To avoid this, there is a trick to get back into the slowed down action almost instantly. As it turns out, you can select destinations for units to enter slow motion as well. This means that if you tell a unit to move somewhere by double-tapping, you’ll issue the command to move on the first tap, but the second on selects that destination you highlighted, which again slows the action. With a little practice, you can use this technique to play out full battles, almost completely in slo-mo.
Focus on spearmen, then infantry, then archers: There are three basic unit types in Bad North, and they are all important in different situations. That said though, there is a definite order in their importance that naturally occurs across runs. This has a lot to do with the way that the game ramps up difficulty and mixes enemy types, some of which are weaker or stronger against certain units.Without getting too in the weeds about which units are best for what, just know that spearmen should be prioritized immediately, followed by infantry, and then archers. Toward the late game, you should probably have powerful versions of each of these units in your regular troop rotation, but spearmen are perhaps the most consistently powerful unit thanks to their pike charge ability, which you can use to push enemies into the sea to instantly kill them. From there, infantry are the most flexible/durable, and then archers are key for taking down enemies as they get more numerous.

No ads. Depth of play with "character progression" of your different squads, the option of perma-death. Mini vikings and a fresh art style. Bad North is a fantastic game. It's simple, yet deep, can be played in a casual way, progressing one island at a time, or you can sit down and campaign away. Highly recommended!!
This game shows how you don't need flashy gameplay, complicated mechanics, or high-end graphics to make a fun and entertaining games. I recommend you get it. The five dollars are worth it. Just warning you all though. This game tends to slow down by the end of the game and this is only made worse if you have multiple save files(in my case I only had two). If you delete most of your save files and keep one, your game will speed up significantly.
The game took me about 5 hours to finish, which felt about right for this game. The game makes you think and be tactical to make your troops effective and keep them safe. There are multiple difficulty options so it should be too easy/hard for most people. My only suggestion to the devs would be to perhaps have the availability to play through the game again with your upgraded troops at a harder difficulty. Overall I really enjoyed it, and it was the best mobile game I've played in about a year.
This is one of the best strategy games I've found. The gameplay is enjoyable, the art is fantastic, if you screw up, your game is basically over... Like you have to restart... decisions are critical, you pay dearly for screw ups, though it's not so bad that by other good decisions you can't recover. There is a ton of variety, so you can play through again with completely different results. It's awesome, more than worth the price.
Bad North: Jotunn Edition version builds on the original’s engaging mix of charming aesthetics and brutal tactical depth with fresh content and refined mechanics that elevate the survival challenge. As a seasoned commander, you’ll find the game’s real-time tactics roguelite gameplay both accessible and punishing. The latest update introduces new enemy types and subtle AI improvements, requiring players to rethink established strategies and embrace more adaptive positioning and unit synergy.
