Introduction

Magic: The Gathering Arena is a popular collectible card game where players acquire new cards by winning matches and completing daily quests, building their decks and participating in various game modes. In draft matches, players take turns choosing from a pool of cards provided by the game and battle against seven other players. In open matches, players select appropriate cards from a large pool to battle against other players, showcasing their skills by playing different cards according to the situation on the field, defeating opponents, and winning rich rewards such as new cards and gems. The game is constantly being updated and optimized, with more new cards and events being added continuously. Players can stay tuned!

Gameplay:

Magic: The Gathering Arena follows the same rules as the physical card game, in which players use decks of cards that include land cards that generate five separate colors of mana, and play cards that consume that mana to summon creatures, cast offensive and defensive spells, and/or activate effects and abilities. Players battle other players using a selected deck, with the goal of reducing the opponent's life-total to zero before their opponent can do the same to them.

MTG Arena supports both Constructed Deck play and Limited play. In Constructed play, players create decks of cards from their library. The game gives new players a library of base cards and pre-made decks from those cards, but as players win matches and complete daily quests, they can earn new booster packs that add cards to their library, and allow players to then customize their decks and improve them. Unlike most physical packs of Magic cards and those used in Limited events, which usually contain 15-16 playable cards, purchased packs in MTG Arena contain 8 cards (1 Mythic/Rare, 2 Uncommon, and 5 Common).

The most popular type of limited play, booster draft, pits players against seven other players by having them choose and acquire cards in turn from packs that are supplied by the game. Those cards are then used to create a Limited deck used for the event. An additional Limited format called Sealed allows players to open a set number of special booster packs and build a deck only with cards from those packs. In both varieties of Limited, players attempt to win as many matches as they can with that deck. In best-of-one, the event ends once the player has either won 7 or lost 3 matches. In best-of-three, the event ends after the player completes three matches, regardless of their outcome. In most Limited events, the player keeps all the cards drafted and adds them to their library, and there are generally prizes based on wins that may give booster packs or in-game currency as a reward.

MTG Arena supports best-of-three and best-of-one matches for both Limited and Constructed. In best-of-one games, players' opening hands are not random; rather, the client generates multiple hands and selects one based on certain properties of the player's deck. Hand-smoothing exists to reduce the variance inherent to the game, which is exacerbated by the best-of-one format. The exact algorithm is not known to the public.

Strategies:

Aim for at Least 4 Wins Daily: The first fours wins each day earn you some decent gold. You do earn rewards up to 15 wins per day, but the rewards drops off significantly. As for those daily quests, the longer nature of Brawl games helps you complete quests in fewer games.

Play at Least One Ranked Match: Each season, win or lose, play one Constructed ranked match and one Limited ranked match, which is basically Quick Draft or Premier Draft. This earns you at least one pack per season, and more if you attain a higher rank in the system.

The Best Way to Farm Wildcards: The simplest advice to get more wildcards is to buy more packs, winning them from events counts too. Golden packs are a bonus for buying 10 packs.

Try Draft: There is an actual discount if you use gems to enter Draft events. For instance, Quick Draft is a great Draft mode to start with, the entry fee is 750 gems or 5,000 gold. That same 5,000 gold could buy you five Arena boosters or cost you 800 gems; a savings of 50 gems.

Wait to Open Packs Until After You've Drafted a Set: Wait until you're done drafting a set so that you organically acquire as many cards as possible, then open the packs for that set. This increases your chances to let duplicate protection kick in. Or think of it this way, there's no benefit to your collection if you draft a fifth copy of a card, but there is if you open a pack with that fifth copy. If you'd rather duplicate protection be explained by video, our writer Chris Reay took care of you.

Player Comments:

Awsome game for when I dont have my own cards. the only problem is that you can't search up your own deck or just any deck for that matter. If the devs could add this and still have the wild cards cost for a certain deck it would be even better. one final suggestion is that they should have commander decks and such. I'm not 100% sure that they don't have them but so far i havent found that they do. Overall it is a good game for being on the road.

Great game! Absolutely love this game, even to the point where I wanted to buy some packs but when I did I never got anything from the bundles!! Also ive never been able tp finish the color challenge as i keep getting an error screen even after deleting and redoownloading. I love this game and would recommend but I want a refund or at least the cards I was promised before I play or invite any friends again. Edit: They updated the game several times since this post and I've been playing since.

Ive played a lot of TCGs since the 90s, MTG is by far and away the best one. Being able to play on mobile or on PC when at home or at work is HUGE since my group only plays physical on Fridays. Great game and every match is different, whoever is reading, if you enjoy TCGs, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. you WONT regret the fun and dynamic gameplay.

please see edit I love MTG, but this app is terrible. i cant even open packs on mobile it just crashes. if i look at certain cards it crashes, if i try to look at my hand it crashes, randomly it crashes. Even on my PC this is an issue. sitting there my comp plugged into my router the app tells me connection issue, it's not on my end. great card game but the app is in an unplayable state right now. edit: i am happy to report all issues i was having have been resolved.

Final words:

Magic: The Gathering Arena is an excellent Android adaptation of one of the best card-duel games in history. After all, this game has been relevant for more than 25 years. There's nothing like touching and throwing down real cards, but thanks to this portable version, you always have a rival ready for fighting.
