Grim Quest

Grim Quest
Introduction

Grim Quest is a dark-themed RPG that blends text-based adventure with dungeon crawling. Players control characters of various classes, exploring dungeons of varying difficulty and engaging in turn-based combat. By strategically utilizing different weapons and skills to defeat diverse enemies, players earn rich rewards to develop and upgrade their favorite characters. The game features hundreds of unlockable skills, pieces of equipment, and items; combining these strategically allows for greater damage output and enhances replayability. In addition to multiple difficulty levels, the game offers a "permadeath" mode that challenges players to push their limits—can you complete the game with just a single life?

Gameplay of Grim Quest Mod:

Each dungeon is essentially a square grid – these vary in size. Each turn you can choose one of the adjacent squares to move into it – at that stage you can either encounter enemies, a random event or the exit to the dungeon. You are discouraged from walking back over already revealed tiles as there’s a good chance you will get ambushed. While navigating the dungeons you need to keep an eye on your health, sanity and supplies. I quite like that there’s no mana to maintain, spells are just based on a number of charges that resets before each battle. If you’re low on sanity your fears will start manifesting themselves into monsters that attack you; run out of health and you’ll be kicked out of the dungeon. You will also find various items that buff you for that specific dungeon run. There are a decent variety of dungeons, monsters and a great selection of skills and spells to learn and combo.

One thing that needs to be mentioned is that this game was made by one person, which instantly propels it to a whole new level of excellence. Simple/minimalist graphics combined with classic mechanics and a great amount of depth make for a pretty amazing mobile gaming experience. You can pick this game up for a casual dungeon crawl or run after run attempting to beat a dungeon boss. There’s an ad-free version for £5.49, but it must be said the ads are essentially non-existent – apart from a bottom banner and the option to watch ads for cash every time you return to town (you don’t have to do this if you’d like an extra challenge). Personally I do feel that that price is a little steep – if it was 15-25% cheaper, I feel I’d be a bit more inclined to purchase it. There are some quality of life improvements that could be made like an option to sort your stash or being able to see the spell description at the Alter of Oblivion.

Strategies of Grim Quest Mod:

Bounties in the Dancing Dragon tavern can be reset indefinitely by going to settings (top-right "gears" icon) and reloading your character's save file slot via the "play" menu option. Note that you can reload your current character slot without having to switch character save files, so you can very quickly "refresh" the Bounties options. This is a good way to ensure that all the Bounties you choose are appropriate length or the right monsters for the specific dungeon you're currently working on OR so that you can "turn-in" all those items in storage/inventory that are wanted by Bounties. This is a good way to getting some XP if you're close to level up and have a bunch of items that can be trade-in for Bounties. Note that MOST (but not all) "bomb" type items, herbal materials, and food items are not wanted by the Bounties.

You can reset skill, spell, or pet for a price (after the 1st boss). The only things you cannot reset are your character's background, Blacksmith upgrades (which apply to your CHARACTER instead of equipped weapon or armor), and Council Chamber upgrades. While Lv1 skill or spell are free to reset, you'd still waste the initial gold from learning that Lv1 skill or spell if you change your mind. Therefore, if you're not sure about how a skill or spell work, ask a disposable, rich, and impressionable young adventurer (Lv1 newbie character with Aristocrat background) to test out the skill or spell build in dungeon before you commit to it on your main character.

Several Council Chamber upgrades, Spell mechanics, and Skill effects (or even level requirements) are NOT fully (or at all) explained by the game's user interface, so I'd suggest reading up Grim Quest Mod wiki (https://gqgame.fandom.com/wiki/Grim_Quest_Wiki) if you're the type of person (like me) who HATES unpleasant surprises. On my first character, at Lv32 I invested 1000 gold (not exactly chump change) in Council Chamber to unlock the final tier of Skill upgrade... only to find out right afterward that learning the final tier of Skills required my character to be Lv40. This information was not presented ANYWHERE in the game, including the Council Chamber and the Guild House.

Unless you're looking for more challenging difficulty or thematic/masochistic playthrough experience, it's in your best interest to plan out ahead of time a PERMANENT way of dealing with Sanity without spending any further resources. Yes, it's perfectly fine to rely on dungeon events, items, or gold to replenish Sanity, but you'd be constantly wasting and draining gold. There are many options to "address" the Sanity problem, so I recommend figuring out early on which option you want to choose as you're planning out your character. For ONE example, if you have a mage character with the Fire Salamander pet, you'd never ever have to worry about Sanity again, so you can sell every Sanity recovery item for gold and simply "ignore" choices during dungeon event that recover Sanity, instead always selecting choices that offer item or gold rewards.

Ignore Bounties for Mutagen or Mutagen Potion. Mutagen + Troll Blood Serum = Mutagen Potion, an item that permanently increases your character's HP by 1, so you want to keep and use all the ones you can find in dungeons or in stores. Troll Blood Serum (as well as its components Troll Blood + Aether Solution) are far more commonly found in stores compared to Mutagen, so Mutagen is the limiting component.

Player Comments of Grim Quest Mod:

You can never get bored. This is game has been a constant companion for years now and it's still getting better and better. Monomyth, thank you for the lore and mechanic updates throughout the years, this is a labour of love and it shows. Since I've played all the Grim series games, the only mechanics I don't like or understand are the Wages, which are not exactly very clear. All in all, amazing game, never stop!

I love playing this game because of the variety of different play styles you can replay the game and it can feel like a different experience. But not only is the gameplay good and it's still being updated, but also the game has so much story to offer. I'm still surprised that this game is getting updates to this day, I thought that it was already a one and done thing. I usually don't leave reviews in games but nearly 60 hours into this shows how much I still love playing this game.

you will not get bored. The lore is a wonderful read. The gameplay is not too easy and not too hard. The strategizing between skills and spells or defense for different opponents keeps everything interesting. i like how you can play with different backstories (and abilities) in separate slots as well so there are plenty of chances to experiment with different skill sets and abilities. overall a unique and a very creative game. The ads are manageable as well.

One of the greatest story driven rpgs. Had me playing for hours while not stopping to get more challenging. You have to develop strategy as well. The design is minimalistic and not as overstimulating as the games I usually play, while still containing heavy lore I enjoy reading. The only issue is that there are sometimes translation errors in the texts, but since I can speak english, that's not a big issue.

Final Verdict:

Grim Quest Mod isn’t your standard RPG game. The entire story is told in text form, from the beginning of your journey to the combat sequences. You’ll have to make strategic decisions to determine how you progress, how you strike your opponents, and how you upgrade your character.
