Gameplay of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery:

Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery is a role-playing video game set in the Harry Potter universe established by J. K. Rowling's series of novels. The game is set between Harry Potter's birth and his enrollment at Hogwarts. The game revolves around the player character's journey through life at the school. They can attend magic classes, learn spells, battle rivals, date characters, play quidditch and embark on quests. Through the game's encounter system, players make choices that affect the game's narrative, though sometimes these choices are locked if the player's statistics are not high enough. Players can interact with characters from the series, such as Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid and Severus Snape. After graduating Hogwarts, the game follows the player character in their career with the secret ROCC (Rare, Obscure, and Confounding Case Division) in the Ministry of Magic. Beyond Hogwarts consists of volumes, each coinciding with a year of Harry Potter's Hogwarts school career.

"Energy" is used to perform tasks throughout the game, which regenerate over time. Players tap on the screen to move the character between places. The player also gains different levels of courage, empathy, and knowledge by making choices in game, with higher levels of a particular attribute allowing the player to choose some different dialogue options in game and change interactions with other students and staff.

Features of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery:

Create a Hogwarts student: You begin by creating your own witch or wizard. Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery lets you adjust details such as hairstyles and outfits, so your character can have a distinct look. After creating the character, you choose a Hogwarts House and begin your first school year.

Make choices during the story: Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery uses interactive chapters and episodes that can be played in shorter sessions. You choose dialogue responses and actions during key scenes. These decisions can shape friendships, rivalries, alliances, and some story outcomes as you continue through Hogwarts.

Attend classes and learn magic: You attend lessons with familiar Hogwarts professors as the school years progress. Classes help you learn spells and brew potions, while advancement opens access to more areas of the castle. This structure links school activities to the main story rather than treating them as separate tasks.

Investigate the Cursed Vaults: The central mystery focuses on the Cursed Vaults and the disappearance of your character’s brother. You explore castle rooms that are not normally open to students, solve puzzles, and collect clues. Each new chapter adds more context to the investigation and moves the story forward.

Meet classmates and join activities: You can complete quests with classmates, build bonds, and pursue romance with certain characters. In addition, Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery includes duels with rivals, Quidditch matches, House Cup competition, magical creature encounters, and Patronus moments. Your student can also decorate a personal dormitory as activities become available.

Useful Tips of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery:

With full marks it is helpful if you want to win to have resources available in advance such as food for creatures, coins, gems, etc.

You also want to be careful of spending resources in the store as you will need coins, gems, etc. I would typically save any spending game currency for full marks tiles and if a daily planner task says to spend. Also, sometimes the story says to buy clothes, but first see if it will work just to change your character's outfit. At the beginning, while it is your decision, gems are best left for pets that give energy (which stacks above your energy cap) and for the magical milestones event which gives notebooks, etc, with some excess being able to be used to change a task for full marks.

You get pets with gems and brown books. With the toad, there is a time limited sidequest you can get if from without gems. If you did purchase the toad with gems beforehand, you get a special "skin" for the toad. The choice is yours.

The red, blue, and yellow notebooks are good for getting magical creatures. Some magical creatures are needed for certain side quests. You also get some rewards as you get closer with a creature. Once you max out a creature by bonding (and feeding if you choose), you additionally get attributes, coins, books, etc. for feeding those creatures.

Energy requirements do go up by years so some suggest grinding early (doing repeatable classes). I personally did not focus on that much, but did some natural grinding during events. You may also want to grind if you are not ready to trigger a time limited side quest and did not do the last task before triggering it. In my experience, I did not miss much dialogue, and was able to get past needed duels (sometimes after another try). While year 7 friends do have high attributes, there are plenty of friends to level up that I am not concerned and focus on those I can optimize. Attributes do affect certain dialogue options and friendships, as well as the difficulty of duels. If you keep track of the stat requirements in the spreadsheet, you likely will not have an issue. If a dialogue choice is blocked, you can potentially look online for a walkthrough with the other choice. As for duels, note some duels are meant to be higher than your attributes. Once triggered, you can just try, see if there is a pattern, and/or use game resources for an item in the store which can increase your attributes.

Note that in time limited side quests (tlsqs) many are tappies giving certain rewards such as energy or pages for notebooks or gems. The spreadsheet indicates the rewards and energy requirements. Note in some tlsqs you only get a picture which seems like it does nothing but looks like it should give energy. However, those pictures can be tapped unlimited times when in full marks or daily planner it says to collect energy spots around the castle.

If a tlsq will trigger, you can stay in the last room of the task just before it triggers and you can delay the tlsq. Also, if it pops up, closing the game without pressing start or pressing the x apparantly should delay it too.

Note some achievements and side quests are not available, hopefully they will be though eventually. A couple tlsqs are now only available via the memory book. Note you can still progress years even if it looks like something is incomplete in your achievements, you will likely eventually get an opportunity to do it or it was taken away for all. Just note some quests do get blocked currently in higher year years. (see spreadsheet). Also, some tlsqs can be repeated in the memory book but currently not all, and Quidditch is one time as it counts as a chapter.

Most important, do what makes you happy as this is a game. Do not get overwhelmed by all there is to do if it takes too long. You do need patience to get your goals.

Player Comments of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery:

The visuals are okay, and the sound is great. The on-rails experience means you aren't going to get lost or confused, and always know where to go or what to do next. I like the mini-games for casting spells, making potions, and dueling since they have intuitive controls. Tough choices are going to be made, and I like that it affects the dynamic storyline. I just wish that the timers and energy system weren't the way they are, and that customization options were a bit cheaper.

Meru is perfect; She is completely flawless. As I played, I noticed that every time she looked at my character when he wasn't noticing her, I could see her warm and happy smile. I just want to pat her head, hold her hand and stare into those tired purple eyes as I confess my undying love for her.I began marking on the back of an envelope every time she stole my heart. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several million times. I was incredulous. The game is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that Merula's utter existence is not in line with the style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Merula by the same Asuka Langley Soryu. She wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are liking Merula at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to like best girls." And she was quite right. She was not being ironic. When you love Merula you are, in fact, trained to love best girls.

This is my favorite game. I’ve been playing for years, but I’m just now on my last year I’ve kind of tried to make it last as long as I can because I don’t want it to end. I do all of the special side adventures to try and help it last longer, but there is several for my earlier years I either tried and wasn’t able to complete because some of the time limits are hard for someone that works. It would be nice if the 3 hour time limits would be changed to at least 4 or 5 hours so that they can be completed when most people would have their break at work. Also there are some that I was never offered a chance to complete. I would like to be able to have everything complete by the time I finish the game. Also when I buy the unlimited energy for 5 minutes I’m really only able to use a minute or 2 of it because the rest of the time is taken up with the storyline that you can’t click through to make it go faster so you don’t lose any of your unlimited energy and what I can click through I would still rather the time for the unlimited energy not count down so I can still read the storyline without losing any energy. It would be nice if it would pause counting down during the time you’re reading the storyline. Also I have tons of items to put in my room or the secret clubhouse that there isn’t enough places to put them. It would be nice to have a spot for every special item you win otherwise it’s not as exciting to win it. Otherwise I love the game and the storylines so keep up the great work.

Summary:

Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery is an outstanding adventure game. Its graphics are brilliant--albeit, somewhat reminiscent of The Sims-- its overall feel is unbeatable; and the charisma and charm of the whole cast of characters is just the cherry on top. We're looking at a well made title that's sure to leave any diehard Harry Potter fan thrilled.
