The Spotter: Dig or Die blends exploration simulation with strategic tower defense. As an "observer" stationed at a gas station, you must fend off swarms of mutated creatures emerging from the ruins. By day, you’ll venture into the underground, using a shovel and jetpack to gather resources—materials essential for upgrading your gear and fortifying the gas station’s defenses against the relentless waves of monsters that arrive at night. Success hinges on striking a careful balance: you must manage your resources wisely to upgrade your character, defensive towers, and base, ensuring you can collect more supplies during the day while surviving increasingly formidable attacks once night falls.
Gather Materials Underground: During the day, you explore underground areas to collect resources for crafting and upgrades. Your shovel can be upgraded into a drill for deeper mining, while a jetpack helps you move underground. Each expedition requires you to balance the amount of materials you collect against your remaining stamina and time so you can return to base before nightfall.
Build Your Defense System: At night, waves of monsters attack the gas station. You can install automated machine guns, laser cannons, and rocket launchers, as well as build barriers to protect your base. Traps and mines help prevent enemies from advancing further inside. Alongside automated defenses, you can take direct control of the main turret to support the fight.
Develop Your Character And Base: The game features three upgrade trees for your character, turrets, and base. You need to choose upgrades that suit your current situation, whether that means increasing combat power or reinforcing your defenses. The resources collected during the day determine what you can craft and upgrade before the next attack.
Find Artifacts And Use Special Abilities: While mining, you may discover artifacts with unique effects. Some slow down turret projectiles, summon attack drones, or create a shield to protect your base. These effects help you withstand monster waves and keep your structures safe.

Early on, the game quietly punishes wasted time. Short trips, constant energy resets, and slow looting stack up fast if you don’t fix your core upgrades. Once you correct that, everything starts flowing. You stay underground longer, bring back more loot per run, and your nights become way easier to handle.
Upgrade backpack first, more inventory = faster runs.
Increase endurance early to reduce trips back to base.
Get jetpack quickly so you don’t get stuck underground.
Prioritize turret reload speed before anything else.
Kill runner mutants first during night waves.
Dig deeper, surface loot slows progression.
Delay receiver upgrades until fully prepared.

Fairly standard mindless task game. Clearly took some inspiration from Breath's Edge, but needs something like the narrator or more commentary from the PC to really finish selling the vibe. Needing to drive the car 6ft getting stuck repeatedly to change to the City map probably could use a rethink.
I played the demo of the game and was really amazed at what an addictive loop of digging for resources, finding interesting artifacts underground and then upgrading my gas station was. I was able to playtest the game and I have about 13 hours into it and I'm towards the very end. I ended up buying this game for a few friends since I did receive he product for free. I'm not friends with the devs, but do want this game to be successful because I believe that the devs will keep releasing more and more content for the game.I can say for a fact that for the 10 dollars they are asking for the game, is a steal. You basically need to upgrade your gas station to defend against zombies until you are able upgrade your receiver fully and dig deep enough to get the presidents message. To do this, you will be juggling stamina and your backpack limit as you dig deeper and deeper under the gas station to get resources to upgrade everything from your health to turrets. Under the gas station are interesting points of interests, bunkers and artifacts. The game is very contained and focused. I would def recommend this game based on the price, addicting gameplay loop and devs that are willing to listen to community feedback and I think will just continually add to this game.
Really fun game, has a good core gameplay loop. I appreciate the devs not putting the game in Early Access for several years like most people do today, I'm OK with minor issues on launch being fixed within a day of the game coming out. Games get most of their momentum the week that they release, it's better to support the devs if you see a great product that is 80-90% of the way there than to put them down over minor issues (that have already been fixed). This is my first review on steam just to try to help them a little, I'm thoroughly enjoying the game.

Is the gameplay repetitive?
No, the mix of random artifacts and upgrade paths keeps each run different.
Does the game have a story ending?
Yes, your main goal is to repair the receiver and uncover the final message.
How long has the game been in development?
Active development started at the beginning of 2025. It's been quite a journey!
Why the name 'The Spotter: Dig or Die'?
In the game's world, 'Spotters' are the last lookouts. Their mission is to survive in the post-apocalypse, defend their base, and wait for the President's final broadcast to know what to do next. The title captures this core dilemma: you must 'Dig' for resources and answers, or you will 'Die'.
How long is one playthrough?
A full playthrough is designed to take about 4-6 hours of intense gameplay. We're focusing on a tight, replayable experience rather than a long, drawn-out campaign.
Will there be CO-OP?
This is our #1 question! The honest answer is: not at launch. The game is built from the ground up as a single-player experience. It's our top candidate for a post-launch update if the community wants it!
To conclude, The Spotter: Dig or Die tries to strike a balance between the chill and collected mining experience with tactical, action-packed tower defense gameplay, and it mostly succeeds in the attempt. Until it addresses the issues with its divisive stamina system, it just falls short of being a great game. Nevertheless, it’s still worth checking out and playing yourself.
