Introduction

Paper Tiger Games released a new game called Rivers of Astrum and the version is 0.2.1. The game’s story is about Our tale begins with Kimberly Ashmore, in the pirate-run town of Cliffperch. Orphaned by her parents at the age of three, she was dumped on the streets of this island slum. To this day she does not know why, nor does she know what became of her mother and father. As a result of her environment, she spent her youth learning to exist in the dark alleys and blind corners of the world. Always seeing. Never seen.Through practice and necessity, she learned the arts of stealth, sleight-of-hand, and pickpocketing in order to put food in her stomach.” The guard has a permanent bounty on her persona, but not a single victim has ever caught her in the act. With no face to place on the wanted posters, the town simply began to refer to her as ”The Umbral Hand”. The bounty stands today at seven thousand Kartisian Crowns. Her mastery of the scoundrel’s ways has allowed her to survive and thrive in a world where she was neither noticed nor wanted. She had always told herself that she would stop thieving once she had “enough, but it turned out to be an exercise in frustration to attempt to live life within the expectations of society. Living within the rules just felt so needlessly tedious. In her mind, it made no sense to spend your entire life working to obtain something the “proper way”, when you can simply steal it in one night. Only a massive windfall of wealth would make a “normal” life worth living. To that end, she always keeps her ear to the ground for the next rumor. The next big score. There is an information network that spans the length of the city. Dubbed the Well of Whispers”, it provides information of all sorts, for any able to pay for it. And the Well had recently provided Kim with a potential motherlode. The talk on the street is that of a treasure beyond worth… sunken just off the coast in a vicious storm. If the rumors are true, then it is the kind of treasure that makes fortunes and establishes generational It is a long walk to the beaches of the Queen’s Coast – where the shipwreck is said to have occurred – and she wakes now to prepare for the journey.

Characters:

Kim Ashmoore: Kim Ashmoore is an orphan, dumped on the streets of Cliffperch as a child. A port town, and pirate den, the city of Cliffperch is lawless, and run by a group of self-styled "Pirate Lords". Growing up in this environment meant that Kim had to learn the arts of thieving, burglary and pickpocketing to survive. She has been rather successful at all three, but recently a change in the air has come. Kim senses that she is no longer safe in Cliffperch, and sets out to secure the means to build a life somewhere else.

Cara: Cara has no memory of how she arrived in the town of Cliffperch. She has simply always been there, as far back as her memory goes. The people of Cliffperch are largely distrusting of outsiders, and - being a Half-Elf - Cara is doubly shunned by most. Kim's long friend and lover, they are partners in crime. Cara is the voice of reason to Kim's rash thoughts, and reckless actions. Her partially elven blood grants her access to magic, and she has used it plentifully over the years in order to save Kim and herself from various spots of trouble.

Sandra Gale: Sandra Gale is the Captain of the "Red Tide". A pirate since she was a young girl, Sandra is generally a lively ball of witty retorts and conversation. She takes very little seriously, but underneath it all there is a buried all-consuming rage that will soon boil its way to the surface.

Vex: Vex is a full blooded Elf and survivor of the Great Exodus. A long studied scholar and theologian, Vex spends her life in pursuit of knowledge of any and all things. Recently, she uncovered a deeply disturbing ancient secret, and is now making moves to investigate it.

Player Reviews:

I just started playing this last night. And I need to discuss something with you dev!The female voice actor that voices Kim is a good actress. HOWEVER, the actual recording of the voice is a bad recording. I can hear the room noise (floor) of the recording in the mix. Her voice is muted and muddied as a result, and after just 4 text boxes I turned voices off.The problem is likely that the mic input gain is too high, or possibly whoever is recording is using too much compression, thereby crushing the audio and raising the floor. It could possibly something that you are doing in post processing with the EQs and stuff, but I would need more information to confirm that.Anyway, I can already tell after just a few minute playing just how much you love this game. That audio track isn't up to the rest of the game's standards. If you want help, and it's mic gain, or compression issues, I could probably explain the fix to you in a few minutes. EQ and post processing issues would be more complicated, but not insurmountable.Or, you can just look up those issues on the net. (Mic gain is just rebalancing a knob, and compression is just rebalancing several knobs).

This is a promising start! When it comes to the filters: I guess they are working in as far as none of the content that I filtered out came up in the story. On the other hand, not all content that I activated happened in the story. But then again, the story is quite short at this stage, so that may just be because of the lack of content at this stage. But it is really a good start. I hope, it will be continued!

Really loved it, especially with a lesbian protagonist , as a lesbian myself it is hard to find a pure lesbian protag that also has a good story (not that there isn't any, just not a lot). The characters look very good, and not the same overused ones, and really looking forward to whats to come, definitely going to be keeping my eye on this one, good luck dev!

Changelog:

v0.2.1

Support Galleris and in-game Choice benefits have been implemented, as well as an option added to the main menu screen to input supporter codes.

Support Codes will change with every release. And will be handed out to supporters privately.

All of the game’s animations have been upgraded to 60 FPS! … Save one. This one has been upped to 40FPS. If I’m being honest, I’m not pleased with the state of most of the animations. At some point I hope I can remaster them, so to speak. But not at the cost of development time. I’ll endeavor to get smoother ones moving forward.

An opening animation has been added to the game as well, as I’m sure you’ll notice. This is a work in progress.

All dynamic messages displaying relationship changes have now been centered on the screen.

Relationship Changes will be displayed in specific colors, indicating the degree of loss/gain. These colors are displayed in the “About” screen, in the Changelog section, in-game.

Many User Interface elements changed/updated. This brings us pretty close to the final form, but I always expect they may need to change or be tweaked in the future.

Tutorials on game-specific features have been added to the introduction overview (that plays once upon starting the game). It’s all pretty straightforward, but you never know.

The primary focus of 0.2.1 was to polish the user interface, and implement supporter benefits. This was accomplished, but it’s worth nothing, that THERE IS NO CONTENT UPDATE FOR THIS VERSION. The story will not move forward until the next release, which is already approaching the halfway point.

Known Issue: Implementing the code changes for supporter benefits did cause a few “collateral damage” typos, nothing that affects gameplay, but the few you will run across may be a little obnoxious. I’ve cleared out the ones I’ve located for the next update, but feel free to report any you find, incase I missed them!

As of now, the game exceeds the standard file limit allowed on itch.io. I’ve emailed itch.io support to request an increase to this limit, but until they respond (assuming they’ll say yes), I simply cannot post new versions there. The last version available on itch.io at the time of writing this, is version 0.2.

Conclusion:

With immersive storytelling, challenging gameplay, and a beautifully designed world, this app will keep you hooked from start to finish. Encounter intriguing characters, make impactful choices, and experience the consequences of your actions. Engross yourself in a world of shadows, mysteries, and unexpected twists. Download the app now and unravel the secrets of Astrum.
