Absolute Drift
Introduction

Absolute Drift is a racing game centered on the art of drifting. Players can take on over 30 tracks of varying difficulty or explore open-roam zones; the game also provides tutorials and guides to help newcomers master essential drifting techniques. To secure a win, players must follow the ideal drifting lines, navigating through designated checkpoints while maintaining a drift all the way to the finish line. As you race, the game automatically records your runs, allowing you to review your own performance or watch how others drive—a great way to refine your drifting skills.

Gameplay of Absolute Drift:

As you start out, you'll find yourself in various themed free-roam areas. There are a few things you can do, such as finding the hidden "x" blocks scattered about or even completing certain missions on the stage. The missions include goals like drifting between two structures, jumping over an obstacle, and other things.

However, the meat of the game lies within the tracks. You can consider the tracks as the levels of the game, and there are 34 in all. However, to gain access to later ones, you need to complete enough missions in the free-roam area before gaining access to the next area.

To get started on a track, just drive your car into it. There's a mix of tutorials and standard tracks and events as well. The tutorial stages are to help you learn new game mechanics, and the regular stages help you apply what you've learned and test your skill.

Every level contains about five objectives, such as earning a specific score threshold, completing certain tasks (drift past five clip zones, do 20 drifts, etc.), getting multipliers, and more. Oftentimes, you'll find yourself replaying a track a few times before all goals are completed, but this just adds to the game's overall replay value.

You earn points for successfully doing drifts, grazing clip zones, doing donuts, spinning in designated zones, and more. As long as you don't crash or mess up, you'll get multipliers that increase your score as well. This is definitely a game that takes time, patience, and practice to fully master.

As far as customization goes, you're able to drive your car through a "Paint" garage in the free-roam zone to get a randomized color paint job. More cars get unlocked as you progress, with all of them having their own handling specifications. That means some cars drift better than others, but you need to earn them.

Skill-Based Progression System: Progression is tied to performance rather than speed. Achieving higher scores requires better control and precision, motivating players to continually improve their skills.

Relaxing Yet Demanding Atmosphere: The calm presentation contrasts with demanding gameplay. This balance creates a relaxing environment that still challenges players to push their limits.

Useful Tips of Absolute Drift:

Mount Kzumo - 7 Second Drift Challenge - On the second corner, you will want to take the drift line close to the barrier then follow out wide while slightly reducing your speed so you don't hit the barrier. Follow out the corner all the way around and you will probably have to crash into the barrier to get the 7 second drift.

Mount Naeba - 2 Perfect Drift Lines Challenge - Luckily, the 2 drift lines are at the start of the event meaning you can restart if you mess up. The first corner you want to take at half speed and close to the barrier, then accelerate out of the corner. The second corner is a lot harder and you will want to enter will less than half speed. Get as close as you can to the outer barrier and accelerate out of the corner.

Mount Hokuchin - 7 Second Drift Challenge - The last two events have no barriers making things even harder. You want to do the 7 second drift around the loop which is the second corner on the track. You will want to enter the drift wide and come in close, then steady the speed so you don't fall off the track and drag it all the way around. You will probably end up falling off the track at the end of the drift to get the 7 second drift.

Mount Hotakadake - 2 Perfect Drift Lines Challenge - The first drift line is the first corner on the track and it's pretty simple by entering the line with about half speed. The other drift line is about half way around the track making this challenge the most annoying one. You will to enter the second drift line at about quarter speed and start out wide and come in close. You will want to instantly accelerate, then reduce the speed and then accelerate again.

Player Comments of Absolute Drift:

Don’t be fooled by its minimalistic art direction, either. When you first start out playing, you’ll be crashing. A lot. I don’t think I’ve ever played a more difficult game without throwing in the towel after a few hours of being repeatedly beaten down, but I had to know why and how a positive Steam User Rating was even possible.

And then it happened. Things all of a sudden just… clicked. I was effortlessly drifting around corners and between objects in an incredibly smooth and fluid motion. I finally found myself in the state of Zen that the game hopes to instill in its players, which also meant that I was successfully completing the missions and events I was previously failing time after time. More worlds became unlocked for me to explore. Granted, it was much more of the same in terms of the foundational challenges, but it was great to finally get out of World One (after multiple hours) and experience some new scenery and level designs. The Midnight Events are especially fun to play.

It’s worth working towards unlocking all of the levels that Absolute Drift has to offer. While I love down-to-the-detail realistic graphics, Absolute Drift’s top-down, minimalistic design is a refreshing experience. While there are timed challenges, it never really feels like I’m under pressure, again falling in line with the game’s focus on the art of Zen and its connection to the world of drifting. I would have loved for this easy-going feeling to have clicked much sooner in my playthrough than it did, but it ultimately made Absolute Drift a better experience once it happened.

My first interaction with this sort of minimalistic racing game came in Art of Rally, which was created by the same team - which isn't surprising, given the art style and focus on Zen. Although I would have liked for that Zen to have come into play way earlier than it did, once everything clicked, Absolute Drift became worth picking up for a quick race whenever I have a spare moment. Just don’t expect to reach that level of driving skill quickly… if at all.

Final Thoughts:

In Absolute Drift, you won’t just be racing against your pals. You may compare how well you drift to other players worldwide thanks to global online leaderboards. Enjoy the company of fellow drifters worldwide as you work your way up the rankings and prove that you are the best. Are you prepared to declare yourself the supreme drifter?
